 Cat’s Hostel in Madrid, one of the Spanish capital’s most popular hostels, has won the much coveted award for ‘World’s Best Hostel’ as voted for by Hostelworld.com customers. At the award ceremony, which was attended by over 300 hostel owners, managers and hostel staff members, Cat’s Hostel manager Jaime Herrero said he wasn’t expecting to win anything.
"At this moment I am very happy. I was not expecting to win. We are only six months old and I was hoping for something but not number one."
When asked what made his hostel so popular he said “Our hostel is in a very nice building, located in an old palace. We also have very good staff, and another reason is because we are in Madrid! It is great for travellers and it has a great nightlife.”
He added "Good facilities and good staff make a good hostel. If the people are happy then we are happy."
More than 500,000 customers voted for the awards. The customers, who booked their hostel stays online, were surveyed after their stay and asked to grade their hostel based on six different criteria: character, security, location, staff, fun and cleanliness.
The prestigious "Hoscar" awards were presented at a ceremony in the Temple Bar Music Centre in Dublin, which was attended by more than 300 hostel owners and managers from around the world, as well as representatives from Lonely Planet, the International Student Travel Confederation and the Irish Tourist Board.
