In August 2008, to celebrate the launch of our first city guide video, we ran a competition offering you, our customers, the chance to win a 'Round-the-World' trip worth US$3,000. The competition was open until 30th November, so over the following four months we received hundreds and hundreds of videos. We received good ones, bad ones, and downright odd ones. They concentrated on everything from paraplegic sports to music events and everything in between.
Judged by Hostelworld Editor Colm Hanratty with the help of fellow Hostelworlder Eoin White, they filtered out the good from the bad to thirty videos. Then they looked at all these once more to see what video truly captured everything about backpacking. It was an extremely tough decision, but in the end there could be only winner – a video entitled ‘My Amigos’ by Australian Grace Conlan. Watch the video below and then scroll down to see why we thought it was the best video...
Why we chose this as our winner: Grace’s video captivates everything backpacking is about – for a start it’s called ‘My Amigos’, and anybody who’s ever donned their backpack and went travelling for a few months knows just how many friends you can make along the way. As the song is her own, she kills two birds with one stone – she provides her own narration and music at the same time. There is a variation of shots, such as the slow motion juggling and the shot where she and a friend do cart wheels in Ireland. And for the parts in the video where still photos are uses, she ensures they're not static by adding different types of titles to them. Grace also manages to get around in the video, with 6 countries featured. And like all videos, it is structured, so there’s a start, middle and end. Definitely the best video entered into the competition. Congratulations Grace!
