hello! the hostel in san jose is tranquilo backpackers, and you can find it on this site! its best to use money belts in this area, and even then check your wearing yours alot (a memeber of our party lost his on a bus)! people on the street will instantly know your a traveller, just dont talk to them and as tend to follow you if they do. apart from that no advice springs to mind, most of the locals are very friendly, try and eat at local sodas (little cafes/resturants), and get chatting to the people that own them, as they can normally tell you some good stories! i didnt speek the lanugae apart form hello, goodbye and thank you, but many people speek english there and they always like it when you try, even if it is just to laugh at you! so are you not going to nicaragua?
