I went to Costa Rica past july, its beautiful and people really nice. I can give you some advices. You have to try "los rápidos" i think in english is rafting, the river its so beautiful and full of nature. You can also go to "Toruvari" is a park, where you can enjoy sports like climbing, "tiroleza" etc. Theres a lot of volcanoes but two onf the are special (arenal and poas). Means of transportation are not so good, the country is small, if you rent a car you can easily enjoy all the country. Some people organize tours, they are good, but you have to run against the time, you dont enjoy a lot, better rent a car, is cheap and easy.

I like the cold and the warmth, but too much of both is bad.
I'm not planning to go back, I'd like to in the future, but I don't see it happening the coming year at least. I'm trying to get a job on the mainland so I'll hopefully be travelling to a new home in 2008. I don't know any people in the countries you'll ve visiting except for on professional basis so I'm afraid I can't help you there, but if you know Spanish you will not have any problems I'm sure.

peru? i was going to go to peru last summer but had to take summer classes. i'm planning to go to panama and colombia in june. but that's not for sure yet. good luck!

Wow, 3-5 months that's great. What do you do that allows you so much time for travel? I'm jealous.
I was actually working, I was there only for 10 days and spent most of them in airconditioned conference rooms (never thought I could get hypothermic in Central America :P). I was there last year as well. I did some touristy stuff in both trips; saw a bit of San Salvador, some museums, a friend drove with me around Ruta de las Flores and I went to Tazumal, Ahuchapan and Berlin as part of the short course I was attending. I should post some photos.
