About me

I'm an adventurer who loves to travel, see the sights of the world, learn the languages and embrace the cultures! I grew up in Alaska, where any given day could warrant an adventure. By nationality I am British and American. For years I have studied foreign language and love to communicate with people of all cultures. My mother tongue is English, but I am proficient in Russian, can communicate in Spanish, have just begun to learn Icelandic and know bits and pieces of many others.

My Travel Tip

Try to learn as much of the local language as you can before traveling. Your ability to communicate will heighten the cultural experience!

Hey Ian!
The hostel you asked about is a decent distance outside of the town of Certaldo which is itself about an hour by train outside of Florence. The city is more a traditional Italian village than a touristy city. For food we would have to walk a little bit into town but it wasn't too bad. As for stuff to do there is an awesome castle about two miles away that you reach through a scenic walk. We took the train to Scienia for a day trip but the same train goes to pisa so it is easy to take a day trip there. After 3 days in Certaldo we took the train to Florence and stayed at a hostel there to do all the stuff in Florence. The hostel in Certaldo was a great place to catch our breath and relax but don't expect an abundance of tourist attractions in the immediate area. It is a great place to take in the Tuscan countryside with some wine tho!

Hi Ian and Happy New Travel Year! nice to hear from you too. I haven't been active at all on this site myself and yes I'm on Facebook, even though I'm not particularly active there either. you can find me easily by my name (as I'm the only one in the world :P) Thorhildur Isberg. I see you've moved to Houston - any other travels planned? I'd like to keep in touch, Thori P.S: the rabbit eyes, the blue donkey and the honeybees have all been erased of my wall, thanks for asking ;)

Hi Ian, I just got back (few hours ago). China was more than I had expected, I cycled around the city walls of Xi'an, I walked the Simutai part of the Wall, I ate a snake on the food market in Beijing and learnt how to play mahjong in boat bar whilst floating down the Yangzi. I hope your travel in Iceland have started well. See you, Thori

Ok, now I'm getting excited. I had my first panick attack last night thinking maybe I wasn't booked, I'd arrive in Shanghai and no place to go etc. ;) 16 days.
You're coming to Iceland in late June, I'll be back from China at that time, we should meet for a beer (or coffee) and a chat.

Im thinking University of Essex,in Colchester. Im not really into huge cities like London, so I think somewhere outside of the city would be perfect, ya know? Yeah...I recall seeing previews of The Decent..it seemed a little dangerous...so good luck with the whole not getting hurt/killed aspect of 'splunking.'

Wow, thats a lot of intense stuff you plan on doing there man. I dont even know what splunking is, however, the name makes it seem like not a very inviting sport.

Yeah, I wouldn't recommend Utvarp Saga either, but you won't find a radio station playing only Icelandic music anyways.

There are loads of bands that sing in Icelandic, but those who want to make an intnl career do often sing in English. Bands such as Múgsefjun, Sprengjuhöllin and Hjálmar sing in Icelandic. You should just go to a music store in the summer and ask for samples of music in Icelandic.
I just got my visa for China, but I've been so busy with work and my studies I haven't really spent any time on thinking about China since all is ready, plus I never plan my travels too much. I just let it sort of happen. Am I stoked? I don't know what that means.

i spent hours at the blue lagoon, and did the southern coast tour (thru grayline tours). i only wish i could have spent more time in iceland to explore the interior of the country, so a return visit with more time is a must.

I didnt see a lot of the country tho, only as far north as cambridge and south to dover to catch the boat to france.

sorry, sth got deleted in these answers I'll try again: 1)Í Reykjavík eru mörg veitingahús. Ég á mér ekkert uppáhalds veitingahús. Það fer eftir því í hvernig skapi ég er í hvernig mat mig langar í.
2)Flestir Íslendingar borða heima hjá sér því veitingahús geta verið dýr, sérstaklega ef þú ferð með alla fjölskylduna út að borða.

Hvathan veitingahus er bestt i Reykjavikur? Í Reykjavík eru mörg veitingahús. Þau eru misgóð en ég á mér ekkert uppáhalds veitingahús. Það fer eftir því í hvernig skapi ég er í hvernig mat mig langar í.
Hvar borthar Islandingur? Flestir Íslendingar borða heima hjá sér því að veitingahús geta verið dýr, sérstaklega ef þú ferð með alla fjölskylduna út að borða.

Dude, that is so funny that you mentioned Greenlandic because I too just read about that language last week while reading about Greenland. I didn’t know there were Inuit people living on that island. There is western (Kalaallisut), northern (Inuktun), and eastern (Tunumiit oraasiat), and the dialect of Upernavik (I hope I got those right). There was also a Greenlandic Norse language, now extinct, that was spoken by the 15th century European settlers of Greenland. You’re right though that Greenland is a territory of Denmark (previously disputed by different countries). I don’t have digital, just 35mm, but I take a lot of pictures on my travels.

I think you'll have more fun in the fjörds than in the ocean. You know I just studied up a little on Greenland, I always thought it was closer to Europe, but it almost touches Canada's Nunavut Territory. I like the pics you put up her btw, I think I've seen many of them on myspace too.

tourist favourits are the Blue lagoon and Golden circle, which I'm guessing you already know.
Send me back when you will be coming to Iceland, if you plan only to stay in Reykjavík or visiting some other towns aswell and what you might be interested in. And I will try my best to give you some good tips when I have the time (I'm at work now).

Ops! I didn't even remember I mentioned about getting a scholarship in my profile. Well, I wasn't exactly in Oslo last year. I was in Trondheim, mid of Norway. I think part of the reasons why my flat mate made fun of me was because I wasn't really putting in effort in learning the language. Randomly picking up phrases could be a disaster in communication. Anyway, I do think it would be fun to learn extra languages. I myself am multi-lingual as well. Thanks to my diversified background.

Hey, reconciliation is awaiting us in the future. But we are working on it. I have the confidence that it would be possible. Where do I come from originally? Haha. I bet my face doesn't look Dutch to you, right? I'm a Malaysian with Chinese ethnicity. It is kind of complicated if you don't know the background of South East Asia. I am not emigrant from China, neither do my parents. I am born in Malaysia. I was studying in Norway for 4 months last yer and now studying in Holland for another 6 months. Unfornately, I didn't pick up much Norwegian as most Norwegian speaks perfect English. About Scandinavian languages, they are all quite similar, with Norwegian the hardest to master. It always sounds interesting to listen to them. But everytime when I was trying to speak Norwegian to my Norwegian flat mates, they would laugh at me. Haha. I guess I am just not good in the language.

No white water conoeing for me, they're too undstable. I need to be in a wide raft for that...lol. I just love how relaxing it feels to float in a conoe on a river with ever-changing scenery. You got me on the kayaking, never did that. Not really something that I've wanted to do because it seems like you'd get too wet. I only want to get wet when I'm swimming, or bathing of course...lol. Around the northwest, there are so many mountains, rivers, waterfalls, lakes, forests, and beaches from which to choose. You ever go kayaking?

Do I canoe? Dude, I totally love conoeing. It was one of my favorite things to do when I was in Boy Scouts. We would not only do it every summer camp in a lake, but my troop would do a 3-day trip down the river every year (Willamette River I think most of them). We would conoe down the river and camp out on the side. Did it several times since them too on different lakes (I'm conoeing in some of my pics on myspace). Do you conoe?
