I see you are from France. Have you ever been to Paris? I am thinking of proposing to my girlfriend there. Any tips?

Hola Cristophe,

supongo que prefieres que te cuente en inglés así que allá voy :-)

I spent nearly three weeks in South America. I also started with Brasil: just one day in Sao Paulo (I didn't like it but I was a bit scared of everything so I didn't go very far away from the hotel to be honest...) and then I went to Foz de Iguaçu to visit the Brazilian side of the waterfalls (I stayed at a nice hostel for just one night but there was nothing to do/see in that little town).

Then I went to Puerto Iguazú for two days to visit the Argentinian side of the falls and everything is much better there so I'd recommend you to stay here rather than Foz. All is much funnier, beautiful and safe! Plus, you can easily go to the Brazilian side by bus; that visit shouldn't take you more than a morning.

After that, I left for Buenos Aires. I spent 5 days in that amazing city. Everything there was great so I'd definitely recommend it to anyone :-) You will probably think that 5 days is too much for a city but trust me if I say I still missed some interesting things. Even if you didn't like going out, you should go out in Buenos Aires: night life is great there ;-)

My next stop was El Calafate. I stayed for 3 nights. Spent one day in the South Glaciars (make sure you go for one of the speedy boats! there is one that goes too slow an you get tired of being for a whole day on a boat...) and another one in Perito Moreno (go for the ice trekking thing, it's really worth it!).

That was sadly my last stop in Argentina and I left for Brazil again: a weekend in Porto Alegre (really nice city) and then 3 days in Rio de Janeiro (I loved it! there are many different things to do/see so you should definitively go!) which is safe if you stay in Copacabana or Ipanema.

I'm afraid I only visited two those countries so I cannot tell you about any others but, most of the people I met that were travelling there for some months, they all said Chile and Bolivia were probably the best apart from famous places like Machu Pichu, of course...

Hope you find all this useful and I wish you a good trip!

Ciao,

Cris

Hello Cristophe!

Wow it seems that u'v been receiving loads of tips already ;D

In Rio I'd recomend you to stay in Ipanema.. Nice safe area, great beach (go to Posto 9 if you wish to party and see people or in front of the country club if all you want is chill)

Salvador is AWESOME, and if you have time (I don't know how many days you are spending in each city), it might be worthy to go to FLORIANÓPOLIS as well (its on the south).

Regarding flights be aware that Gol is not always the cheapest ones. They sell themselves as if they were the Brazilian Low Cost Low Fare airline. They are Low Cost for sure, but not always Low Fare (many times Varig or even TAM will be cheaper and will offer a better service).

I don't know if there are direct flights from Rio to Manaus, but most of them will stop in Brasilia. There's a good number of flights conecting Brasilia to Salvador as well..

If I may, I'd suggest you to flight direct to the North East of the country from Europe (there are many many charter companies doing these flights for very low price... I know that TAP - in this case not charter - flies direct to the North East..). I'd go then to Manaus or to Brasilia (there's not much to do but its nice if you are into architecture, and its our capital. There's quite a few flights connecting Brasilia to Manaus so I think you will be safe on this).

After Brasilia I'd go to Rio, and after Rio I'd head south. You could then go to see the falls (maybe florianopolis before that) and then head to Argentina..

Well I think you should be fine like this. If you have any questions let me know, it will be a pleasure to help :D

Cheers,

I would estimate very roughly Rio-Manaus at R$ 400, Manaus-Salvador at R$ 350 and Salvador-Foz do Iguaçu at R$ 400. Then to BS AS about R$ 250. That´s about R$ 1400 or US$ 753 at a R$ 1,86 FX rate. Maybe u could find better deals on those websites. But be prepared to lots of stops cause the cheapest flights are not direct. Sure u can tell me when ur here and u could go out with me and my friends. Cheers.

salut chris, I think u should buy the air tickets in advance from the local lowcost companies www.voegol.com.br, www.voebra.com.br and www.webjet.com.br. these are not as low cost as european companies but offer some good discount. tickets to manaus are expensive anyway and u should take vaccinations to go there cause it´s in the middle of the rainforest. I think at least yellow fever and malaria are needed and should be taken a few weeks in advance for them to have effect. u should ask the brazilian consulate/embassy close to u.
salvador is awesome!! here u can see of what´s going on regarding nights out http://www.clikfesta.com/. it´s good to avoid boring/lame tourist traps and go where locals go. the aeroclube used to be one of the coolest places to hang out when I was there.
cheers

hi, cris.

well, it's a huge trip that you´re planning! all those places that you mentioned are very far away from each other, but, good luck! i'm here to help.

you can feel free to acess me on my email to ask me some more specific stuff: dacarulina@gmail.com

here in rio, i can tell you about some hostels and nice things to do and places to visit, but first, i'd like to know what are your interests, witch kind of things you like and stuff like that.

about transport, i may be wrong, but, as far as im concerned, it's sheeper to by plane tickets in europe than here in brasil.

feel free to ask me anything you want to know.

nice to meet you too,
ana

p.s. im going to paris next week, and than, london. it would be nice if we exchange some tips.

oh, sorry about my english. i'm not quite used to put it in practice. =)
