About me

I'm 21 and I just finished undergrad. Before going off to grad school in the fall, my friend and I are planning on backpacking in Europe for 2.5 weeks (July 26-Aug 15). The itenarary so far is: Paris => Amsterdam => Stuttgart (Germany) => Milan => Florence => Rome => Some place near the Mediterranean Sea with a nice beach. Give me a shout if you have similar plans!

cool we can definately meet in amsterdam, for that part of my trip I´m with a friend too. I´m staying at hans brickter budget hotel. here´s my email, I check it more often than this site. typrouty@hotmail.com. I´ve been travelling since the 14 June, but on the 23 I started a summer school program in Kassel Germany. My last day is tomorrow so I´m backpacking again soon. most of the trip I´m alone but I made a friend here that I´m meeting up with here and there. I haven´t been to amsterdam so I don´t know where or when to meet but we can just arbitralily pick something too.

yeah from rome you take a train to naples, then from there you take a metro to sorrento. to find the metro leave the platforms and go left and there´s a hallway to the ticket office. be ready for a long ride, I think it´s over a half hour (an hour?) in some pretty intense heat. but from sorrento you can get to capri and pompei. I´ll be in amsterdam July 31-august 3 or 4. then paris on august 13 - 28. off course nothings set in stone though. maybe we could meet somewhere but I think it looks like we´ll be just missing each other. so I figure we´ll have to warn each other of dive hostels and other tips. yeah, I live in Edmonton, where are you from.

oh, and if you want to go further south in italy I can recomend about the best deal of the century. Go to Sorrento and there´s a hostel called Ulysse. It´s going to be a hotel charging a couple hundred a night but is waiting on licensing or something so I stayed for 18 euro a night (gotta pay for air conditioning) http://www.wotif.com/hotel/View?hotel=49668 that´s not the official site, I can´´t find it. My local friend had actually done all the booking for me. that site doesn´t list the price I paid so maybe calling the hostel directly would be better

I thought it was a great place and have been recomending it to others. There is air conditioning and it was free! best to ask first in case I didn´t notice getting charged but it was there and it worked. It is quite clean they have two or three cleaning ladies so the rooms and bathrooms get done once a day. there is one reception guy by the name of will, he´s an american and knows rome inside out so he´s great for tips and directions. Also for a drink if you invite him. There´s one guy that´s kind of a jerk but he only works a couple nights a week. and one italian who is quite nice too. If you see will say hi for me (Ty the Canadian)

Got your message - Legends hostel in Rome does NOT have air conditioning. I would rate it pretty good otherwise. There are I think 3 or 4 different people at the reception desk - all speak great english and were very helpful. No big lockers for your backpack, but a small lock box for valuables. I believe all rooms have 6-8 bunk beds, with one bathroom per room. They do make a decent pasta dinner with some wine each night for free. There's also a kitchen for cooking and machine that dispenses coffee, hot chocolate, OJ, etc., for free. Our bathroom was pretty clean, but the shower was TINY and had some mold on the ceiling. Pretty cheap internet access. It was 96 degrees when we were there, so AC would have been great, but we survived (there was a small fan in the room). For the price it was pretty good for what we were looking for... but if you have to have AC, this isn't the place. Let me know if you have any other questions.

Hey Susan.
Well, to begin with i was staying in the 3 people room with an attached bathroom. That was really really well kept. Had been to many but really this does take the cake for all the hostels that iv been to. My rating was based on that. But most of those that were staying there at the same time said it had been a good place to be at. Had another friend living in some other hostel in Rome n she ended up with bed bug bites. So, yer call. But the staff makes the stay awsome. And make sure u go for their night pub crawl. Well, anything else just ask n ill be more than happy to share my info about rome. Have a nice day.

hey susan,
yea, in retrospect i guess my review was a little over-zealous. legends doesn't have air conditioning, but neither did any of the other hostels i stayed at. rome was very hot, but since i was never in our hostel room during the day, i didn't find it stifling or anything. as you probably know, it gets cool at night and so an open window was perfectly fine. just try to get a bed that's not too close to the window because my travel buddy was a little disturbed by the street noise. other than that, i loved the staff and the other people staying there. it was a great place to stay. enjoy your trip! i miss europe already, and i just got home yesterday!

halo, i have been stayed in legand hotel for 6 days, it is not in my plan but i lost my passport. i think this hostel is good because the staff there are really nice as they help me a lot on teh passport stuff. about air-conditioning.. i am afraid there is no air-conditioner in the roon but there is one in the common room and also one in teh reception area( for the reception and for computers), tehy are really cool enough. There are fans in rooms, but i think it is not too hot at night so it is fine to sleep with the fan. about the cleaniness, i think it is quite ok, you will have individual sheet for ur bed. and i saw tehy employ a maid to clean the hostel everyday, these are all noticed by my own observation, you will enjoy to stay here. teh only problem is that the lighting is not enough in rooms, if u want to do some readings, you have to move to common room.

Hi Susan,

I just stayed at Caulaincourt for four nights and had no problems. There isn't really any security: no lockers, you just leave your stuff in your room. Take valuables (money/passport) with you or leave with front desk. I carried mine with me. But I think that the fact they don't have any lockers tells that they don't really have a theft problem (just a thought). The hostel is fine, lots of stairs, and expect to spend 30 minutes checking in - they are super-slow. Follow Hostelworld directions to find it - they are really good. I met some great people at the hostel, I think that's the most important thing. Plus, they have a very nice breakfast.

Paris is beautiful, you will fall in love with it. 3 days may not be enough time to see everything you might want to see, but you'll be able to cover a lot. At night, buy a cheap bottle of wine at a mini-market (2.5 euro for 500 mL), ask them to open it for you at the store, and go sit on the Sacre-Coeur stairs with your buddies from the hostel. You'll never want to leave.

Where are you staying in Amsterdam?
