Hi Aimee. Sure thing. I stayed in Green tortoise on a recommendation of a friend who had a blast there several years ago. She\'s the type who can strike up a conversation with anyone, anywhere, anytime. Myself on the other hand, while no shrinking violet, find it easier to make friends in those low key, laid back hostels with fewer people and nice common areas. The G. T. was definitely not that place. The only common areas were the internet room, in which everyone is obviously preoccupied, and the large and extremely rowdy dining area/ballroom. It was sometimes quite daunting to walk into the darkened room where people were drunk and quite literally dancing on the tables! I don\'t want to give the impression it\'s unsafe or unfriendly just that you need to be quite outgoing to throw yourself in. So in the end I think it depends on the type of person you are. They do have free meals 3 times a week where you\'re encouraged to chip in in the kitchen which would probably be a great way to meet people, unfortunately I didn\'t go along to any due to time constraints. The only other thing I\'d say is that the street is full of strip clubs and rougher bars but I never felt unsafe walking around at night, there are bouncers everywhere and always people around.
Anyway hope this helps out.
Jen.
