Hi there. Sorry for the really, really slow reply, but for some reason your message only just arrived with me now. Hopefully it\'s not to late to give you some info though.
June and July are the coldest months in the south. The weather doesnt improve much until you get as far north as the Sunshine Coast, north of Brisbane, so while you\'re in New South Wales, be prepared for rain, cold nights and mild days.
Because of the weather, I wouldnt recommend travelling up the east coast of NSW. Most of the towns between Sydney and the Gold Coast are seasonal towns, and there wont be much to see or do at that time of year. Instead, Id suggest going west from Sydney over the Blue Mountains (well worth checking out for a few days if you like hiking!). From there you can head for what is generally defined as the outback: Broken Hill.
Broken Hill is a mining town in the desert. It\'s the biggest outback town in the state and from there you can visit smaller outback communities like White Cliffs to really get a good experience of the area. I highly recommend an overnight trip to White Cliffs if you can arrange it: Transport out there can be a bit of a hassle (6 hours on a dirt road).
Unfortunately, there arent any (decent) roads heading north from Broken Hill, so after that, you will have to travel quite some distance back east before heading into Queensland. From the Queensland border, it\'s worth heading along the coast line through Tweed Heads, Brisbane, Noosa etc.
Personally I find the Gold Coast over rated, but Brisbane is worth a few days if you\'re after interesting nightlife. Then, just north of Brisbane, on the Sunshine Coast (Noosa Heads) is probably worth a week or so as well. From that area you can visit Fraser Island, which is an amazing place, and definately worth doing if you have time. Try and arrange a tour where you can camp on there overnight.
Im not too sure about what is interesting further north of there, since Ive never really travelled that stretch of coast properly, but when you get to Cairns, I can also recomend making a trip out onto the Atherton Tablelands, as well as the usual reef and rainforest trips.
Anyway, hopefully this is of some use to you and it\'s not too late for you to use. If you need anymore info, just drop me a line.
Cheers!
