Do NOT backpack in Mexico. Wait, a least until their affairs are in order. The crime seems to be escalating there, especially in the states bordering the U.S., as the government knows not how to manage such issues related to the drug cartels. It is such a shame, since parts of that country are very beautiful, but it\'s best to steer clear of that area until tourism improves.

Hi Heidi, I was in Mexico but only in the very toursity part of Cancun. I do think it would be safe enough to travel arround on your own as long as you take the usual measures.
