It depends on what your into. We stayed at the Youth Meeting Point Hostel which was only 2 blocks from Central Station and enjoyed it. Its right at the end of the red light district. I went with my boyfriend and neither of us do any drugs so spending a week in Amsterdam was just too long. The city is pretty dead Sunday through Wednesday other then the coffee shops having people there smoking and doing mushrooms. We went to a couple clubs in the Leidseplein neighborhood, which is a happening side of town with many clubs and bars. Let me know more of what your looking for and I can answer it a little better for you. I will say that the exchange rate from the US dollar to the Euro sucks and seems to keep getting worse daily:-( and dont take a bunch of cash out there with you to exchange, its cheaper to get money out of the ATM since they give you the exact exchange rate and no fees other then what your bank may charge, you should check with them, mine was only 2% which really wasnt anything.
