Travel tip

Try to do more than the "touristy" stuff in the city! Ask people in your hostel about cities... you learn so much more that way! Be flexible and allow for change. Go out and enjoy the nightlife!

About me

I love to travel and to meet new people. Just finished backpacking around Thailand and Cambodia. I can't wait to go back and experience more of what Asia has to offer : )

G'day Shannmk, long time no chat, how's Minnesota going? All that snow and not a decent mountain for miles!!! I thought I might just drop you a line to say hello and tell you I am heading back to the US for 7 weeks starting February 1st next year. I am restricting my stay mainly to Tahoe this time, the less travel I do the more time I can spend on the slopes and in the US. Skiing is a very addictive sport and the options in Australia are a bit tame compared to North America. Our very limited alpine areas are retreating up the hill at a frightening pace with Global Warming and all, but I am paying an extra $30 on top of my $1200 airfare as a "carbon offset". I hope it isn't just a con from Qantas and my money will go towards something worthwhile. I'm also heading for another Lebowski Fest, this time in Tampa FL ,as well as spending a few days driving between SF and LA and visiting Lebowski film locations in LA. I have done this by bus and train before but would like to do it by car as I planned last time. Renting a car became impossible when my licence ran out on my birthday...Doh. Something to remember to check before you travel again if you intend to drive overseas. Did you know they had a Lebowski Fest in Minneapolis in September last year? Were you inspired to go? I see you have travelled plenty since we last had contact, did you ever make it to Australia? Because of our now very strong dollar, about 18 months ago would have been the best time to come when it was sitting at about US$0.65. Now we are almost on par and the experts (the same ones who failed to see the crash coming) are saying that it may go as high as US$1.20 at about the time I come to the US. You will also find planes full of thousands of "Oprah's devotees" because she is coming in January (I think), which is big news here, even rating a mention in our federal Parliament! They say her little sojourn is going to be worth hundreds of millions to our tourist industry. jimekins@yahoo.com is easier. Jimekins abides...

Also - for Melbourne download our free pocket guide and listen to our podcasts. Click on \'guides\' up top right and choose Melbourne from the dropdown and hit \'go\'.

Hi, Thanks for the message. Apart from hitchhiking suggested below (!!) or driving the cheapest way is by bus. Try www.greyhound.com.au. Oz Experience travel around also, but it\'s more an organised tour sort of thing. Hope this helps, Colm

Hi Shannmk The cheapest way to go - well, that is always hitchhiking, but not always the safest unless you are travelling with more than one person. Other than that, if you are willing to drive on the \'other\' side of the road, then hiring a cheap car is probably the cheapest and best because then you get to see more than on a bus for instance. Our train system is mostly non-existent and only has a main one travelling through the North Island (that I know of). There is a Magic bus which you can hop on and off at your leisure in designated places. If you have the ability to go online and be patient for the right one, there are $1 busses as well, but there are probably obvious disadvantages to that also (haven\'t tried it). Driving is easy round New Zealand as there is really only one major highway from top to bottom. Maps are easy to come by and some car rental agencies provide these with the car. The rental starts from about $25 per day, but cheaper the longer you have it. Must do\'s - Rotorua (thermal city, cultural shows), Taupo (skiing, tandem skydiving, bungy jumping, fantastic scenery, cultural shows), Queenstown (skiing, awesome views, bungy jumping, plenty to do), West Coast of the South Island (just awesome and lots to see, do and experience), Bay of Islands (lots to do and see), Kaikoura (whale watching), Napier (wineries, Art Deco), the bigger cities - Auckland, Christchurch, Wellington (night life, things to do, big city stuff). For accommodation, try either the hostels (which we excel in by the way), or for free try www.couchsurfing.com but you may have to host a few people in your area first to get some good feedback on your profile. My daughter tried this and found it awesome and a good way to meet people with ideas about what to do and see in their area. Most of all, be safe. New Zealand is like the rest of the world, don\'t take it for granted that awful things can\'t happen. We are not immune from crime by any means. Lastly, have fun and the best time for summer stuff is January/February, the best time for winter stuff is June/July. Cheers. Liz Hello wanderlust. I am currently in the process of planning a trip to Aus/New Zealand and just wondered if you had any tips about the cheapest way to go about this. Also... once in New Zealand, do you have any advice on where I should go or any \"must do\'s\" Thanks so much!! Shannon
