Boston Pocket Guide

Images Of Boston

Steeped in history and small enough to explore in a day, Boston is one of America's most charming cities. This is the city that spawned America's first public park, its first public college and its first subway system. Funnily enough, it is America's oldest city too. But it's not all history. Socialising and sports are all pastimes of Bostonians, as is relaxing - one of Boston's finest attributes is its easy pace of life.

    Totally enjoayble

It was the best experience of my first ever solo trip! Enjoyed having dinner alone in a pub with live music....was so hard to pick one! I am Italian and, of course, I would never have italian food while travelling abroad BUT I have to say I have been really tempted walking around Little Italy's streets. The atmosphere was great,! It is for real a little italian community and all restaurants looked interesting and food looked (and smelled!) delicious! Loved it!

Insider Tip:Walk walk walk!! Enjoy the neighbourhoods!!

    Drinking In Boston

Not a great city if you want to go out partying to the early hours, it's possible but this is very much a drinking culture based around bars not clubs. There are plenty of bars to visit. For the most touristy experience you can visit the original inspiration for the TV show Cheers; or visit a working recreation of the bar from said show. If you want a more raucous time head for South Boston for a little local flavour but do watch out as your leaving the safety net of the Touristy downtown area.

Insider Tip:Head out to the Sam Adams Brewery. You take a 10 minute drive or get the Orange Line Metro which won't cost you more than $5.30 return. You can go on a free tour complete with free beer. Yes. FREE BEER

    Boston Review

Boston's a great city. It has a lot of history and you can see a lot just by walking around. Boston common is picturesque too. Transport around the city is pretty good too, though most places are pretty easy to walk to within the downtown area. Cambridge area and Harvard University are well worth a visit too.

Insider Tip:Club Passim just off Harvard Square is excellent. Was there for the campfire festival on memorial day and there was some excellent music. The club has bands on mostly every night and also has an adjoining vegetarian restaurant, Veggie Planet, that serves excellent food.

Boston is a great place to visit - it has a very English/European feel to it. Its a safe city, easy to navigate and has some great attractions to visit. Irish bars are two a penny, so make sure you check out that thriving community. Easy access to neighboring towns such as Salem and Harvard - lovely day excursions that can be accessed by commuter rail.

Insider Tip:Visit the prudential tower for an amazing view of Boston with a mini-Boston museum in the sky (including in price). They also offer a student rate, so bring your Student ID/Card! :)

    New England's Capital

This city you can feel the history all around you, uncommon for an American metropolis, some areas also have a very European feel to it, seafood here almost always is locally caught. It's not a huge city, easy to walk and get around with plenty of historical landmarks to see, great restaurants and pubs to eat and drink, sports events to go watch and guided tours fun to check out. Just a 30 minute train ride to the historical city of Salem, for the October carnival or witch museum.

Insider Tip:There's one Sam Adams brew that only makes it out of the brewery to 6 pubs in town and nowhere else in the country called the Sam Adams Brick Red. Try it, it's good stuff. Can be found a Hennessy's, pub where on Wednesday nights, the Karaoke happens and you sing with a live band backing you up instead of looking at a screen with the lyrics and background music.
