Los Angeles Pocket Guide

Images Of Los Angeles

Loved and loathed in equal measures, Los Angeles is a sprawling metropolis and one of the most diverse cities in the world. Over a few days one can experience the tackiness of Hollywood, meet the eclectic characters of Venice Beach and marvel at the rich and famous in Beverly Hills. Life in this West Coast city is slightly more relaxed than that on the East, and the neighbourhoods are the attractions. Theme parks abound and the LA nightlife is legendary. So whether you end up loving it or loathing it after your visit, you certainly won't be forgetting it in a hurry.

Los Angeles - A dying city

Los Angeles felt like it was dying. Hollywood was less impressive than expected (I wasn't expecting much to begin with), it was tacky, touristy (which you can sort of expect) but just lacks any charm or personality. It felt like the worse that America had to offer, seen as such a cash cow - not a point of pride. The nicest area of LA to stay in would be Santa Monica. It is cleaner and has a better atmosphere. Still, I'd advice heading to San Diego and San Francisco if you have the time.

Insider Tip:Minimize your time here, do what you have planned but don't lull around.

    Dissapointing

Los Angeles is dissapointing if you expect a glamorous city. Hollywood is really run down. If you are plannning a west coast trip, don't spent more than a day there. The walk of fame is just boring and don't do a sightseeing tour. There is nothing to see.

Insider Tip:Warner bros. studio tour was great, but do it on a weekend. Otherwise they might be filming at all the interesting sets. The Griffith observatory is really nice to. The tickets for the planetarium are just 5$. Really affordable.

    Best Location - Hollywood Boulevard

Opposite train station, well connected. On the Boulevard. Location is golden. Services are not. Wifi is POOR.

Insider Tip:Be clear about check and checkout times. Don't be second late, or they'll charge extra. Breakfast is decent. Meet most travelers in the Computer and Dining Area.

    A surprising gem

I really enjoyed this city. The city centre itself looked a bit run down and scary, as most US cities do. However, the scenery was absolutely stunning. You should rent a car and get out into the hills...and keep on driving til you get to the desert. Not often you find somewhere where you can experience lush hills and trees, beach, and desert! Hollywood is not as great as it sounds, and relies too much on its past. "This is where such and such used to drink" is a usual phrase.

Insider Tip:Just avoid the city centre and head to the beach and mountains. Public transport is awful so rent a car - they're cheap.

    Los Angeles, USA

It's one of my fav cities in the US. A little bit difficult to get around but there's lots of culture and it's fun. Lots of great outlet shopping malls will blow your mind away.

Insider Tip:Rent a car for a day or two with friends! You'll see more
