Naples Pocket Guide

Images Of Naples

Naples is like an amalgamation of various Italian cities - it has the attitude of Milan, the sights of Rome, the passion of Venice and the culinary delights of Florence. It is noisy and slightly intimidating, but it is equally intriguing and extremely engaging. Plus it boasts one of the most spectacular settings in Italy, overlooking the Bay of Naples. Many who stop here only do so for a number of hours before going further south to Capri or Sorrento, as Naples is the gateway to both destinations. But if you are travelling to Naples, spend a day or two here before shooting off. You won't regret it.

    A hidden gem

Naples not half as bad as people say it is. Before we got there we had heard about how dangerous it is and how we really need to watch our belongings, but this was not true. We enjoyed every second of Naples. Although it is sometimes a little dirty, it's charm and lack of tourists makes it a perfect destination for travellers.

Insider Tip:Pizza at O'Scugnizzo was fantastic. It is on the Corner of Novara and Genova, just down from the train station. We would recommend this place to everyone.

    A Filthy City

Naples is covered in garbage and graffiti. It was the least English-friendly Italian city I have been to which made it difficult to communicate with shop keepers and restaurant workers. Don't bother going to Naples, spend your time in another city.

If you are from Mumbai you would love Naples. Though the walled city may not be cleanest in Italy, the place is buzzing with activity and the people are very warm and friendly. And the food is the best we had in Italy.

    Naples is dirty

I thought that Naples was a bit grosse. There were a few nice buildings/fountains to see but this could all be done in half a day. Also the guys there are disgusting - whistling/grabbing their crotch and saying god knows what in Italian. YUK!

    Ugly, Ugly City

I have traveled all over the world and can think of few cities as filthy as Naples even in third world countries, nevermind in somewhere like Italy. The trash just piles up in the streets and walking anywhere after sundown, even in groups feels incredibly unsafe. Also, the place is a maze, even with a map so be careful, all the streets are smaller than they look on paper.

Insider Tip:If you have to go to Naples, check out the Archelological museum, ESPECIALLY the "Secret Room" where all the naughty art from Ancient Rome is kept. Some of it is laugh-out-loud shocking though, so probably not the best for the kiddies unless you feel like fielding some VERY awkward questions. Apparently in busy times you have to get a (free) timed ticket to get into the room, but we had no problems.
