Naples Pocket Guide

Images Of Naples

Naples is like an amalgamation of various Italian cities - it has the attitude of Milan, the sights of Rome, the passion of Venice and the culinary delights of Florence. It is noisy and slightly intimidating, but it is equally intriguing and extremely engaging. Plus it boasts one of the most spectacular settings in Italy, overlooking the Bay of Naples. Many who stop here only do so for a number of hours before going further south to Capri or Sorrento, as Naples is the gateway to both destinations. But if you are travelling to Naples, spend a day or two here before shooting off. You won't regret it.

    Roman ruins

Naples was a capital of a country. Nearby there are Ercolano, a ruin from the antiquity, the Mount Vesuvius which swept away Pompeii in 79 AD, Pompeii itself which is about 20 minutes by train from the mountain, and the impressive Royal Palace in Caserta, 45-50 minutes by train from Naples. All these places deserve to be visited. Ercolano, Mount Vesuvius and Pompeii can be visited in a one-day trip by one has to hasten. One day should be spared for the Royal Palace.

Insider Tip:Try the pizzas at the old-town pizzerias. They are huge and tasty.

    Naples and surroundings

Naples will always be Naples but it's improved for the last 10 years. The last time I went it was extremely dirty. There was something strange in the atmosphere, people watched you and asked you where you were going to...I never felt in danger or anything like that but tense. Today things have changed a lot positively. The city centre is worth a visit. 1 day in Naples is enough. What is more interesting if you are into history and nature is Ercolano, Pompeii Scavi and Vesuvius Volcano.
