Naples Pocket Guide

Images Of Naples

Naples is like an amalgamation of various Italian cities - it has the attitude of Milan, the sights of Rome, the passion of Venice and the culinary delights of Florence. It is noisy and slightly intimidating, but it is equally intriguing and extremely engaging. Plus it boasts one of the most spectacular settings in Italy, overlooking the Bay of Naples. Many who stop here only do so for a number of hours before going further south to Capri or Sorrento, as Naples is the gateway to both destinations. But if you are travelling to Naples, spend a day or two here before shooting off. You won't regret it.

Gem in the south of Italy

Nice people, amazing historic places and beautiful nature. Maybe not the perfect place for hanging out at the beach (for that you should make a day trip to Procida) ... but why would you want to do that?! Watch out for pickpockets, even though Naples seems to be a little bit better than its reputation :-)

Insider Tip:Trattoria da Nennella (Vico Lungo Teatro Nuovo, 105) for dinner has inexpensive, authentic food and most of all is a fun experience. Afterwards you can have some drinks at Piazza Bellini.

    The Black Swan

Great city to visit for a few days... teaming with history and charm! Quirky place close to popular tourist sites such as Pompeii, Vesuvius, Herculaneum and Amalfi! Has the worlds oldest aquarium and best food I have had in Italy so far!

Insider Tip:There is still crime here like all major cities, so make sure you spread your important items between your bag and pockets, keep a tight hold onto it all and watch out for motobikes!

    Hated Naples

I hated Naples. There was trash everywhere. People were sketchy. The train station was on a bad side of town. Unfortunately I went on a Sunday and everything was closed. I couldn't even get a pizza. I needed to take a team, but the machine at the tram stop was out of order and the only place to get a ticket was at a Tabacchi, but ALL of them were closed. So I had to take a taxi for an expensive 10€ to go just a km or two. Traveling as a single woman in Naples was the worst experience.

Insider Tip:Don't go on a Sunday and don't go alone at night.

    Dirty

Naples was a dirty city. Everywhere you turned there was garbage in the street and graffiti on the walls. The people were also really rude. I think they just don't like foreigners. It was worth going to see Pompeii and I really liked the archaeological museum in Naples that houses many of the original pieces that were recovered from Pompeii. But otherwise, I wouldn't ever bother going back.

    visit napoli!

Great city with so much to do! Apparently has the best pickpockets in the world according to a friend, but that's irrelevant next to the energy and historical might that Napoli has. Also, best pizza I've ever had in my life- finally something that beats out my italian style pizzeria from back home in NY! Easy to get to other places in the South, but also worth visiting regardless. Also, love how much more economico things are here!

Insider Tip:Try not to be here on a Sunday- most of the things we wanted to do were closed (Castel Dell'Ovo, Chiostro Santa Chiara), and lunch is hard to find if you plan poorly and search for pizza around 3pm
