Getting There

By air: The closest international airport to Pretoria is Johannesburg's OR Tambo International Airport. Depending on the traffic, it's about a 25 minute drive from the airport to Pretoria. Airport shuttles can be pre-booked with lots of hostels; alternatively some are available from the airport. Taxis can also be picked up from the airport.

By train: The main train station is located on the corner of Railway and Andries Streets. As well as being visited by the country's famous Blue Train, Pretoria Train Station offers commuter services to Johannesburg.

By bus: Baz Bus, Intercape and Greyhound are just a few of the major bus companies offering services which connect Pretoria with other cities throughout South Africa. If travelling with Baz Bus, you'll have the added security of being dropped directly at your accommodation.

Getting Around

On foot: Walking around is quite safe in neighbourhoods like Hatfield, Brooklyn and Menlyn, as well as in and around Church Square and many other parts of the city. As with any major city, don't flash your cash and here it's also best not to walk around after dark.

By taxi: Private taxis are a cheap and efficient way of getting to the various parts of the city that can't be reached on foot.

By car: Renting a car if you can is a another good way of getting around Pretoria, especially to attractions such as Freedom Park and the Ann van Dyk Cheetah Centre, both of which are just outside the city itself.
