Pentlands Backpackers Hostel

Auckland, New Zealand
97%

Booked for two nights and ended up staying more than two weeks as I relocated to Auckland. Nothing but praise for this well run, clean and homely hostel. From the staff helping me out with a very early morning check in, to how spotless the entire building is, to the proximity of public transport, and the space and friendliness of common areas. A fantastic hostel that I would thoroughly recommend.

Lakeside Backpackers

Great location and helpful staff, but completely lacking in character and atmosphere. I stayed in a single room, and although I expect a small room when booking single - I felt that the price was very high, especially as I then had to pay extra for Internet and laundry.

This was the only hostel I could find in central Sydney with reasonably priced single rooms. Great location only a few minutes walk from Central Station, helpful staff - but could have been a lot cleaner. There was a lot of hair in the female shower for the three days I was there, and I did find a dead cockroach in my bedroom. The single room was tiny - but this was all I needed, so not a problem. I didn't use the shared kitchen and lounge, but the facilities looked good with friendly people.

Sydney Harbour YHA

Excellent YHA. Great location, fantastic acilities, large lounge and kitchen area, lights and plug sockets by each bed, and even sockets in lockers. Everything a hostel should be. It is expensive for a dorm room, but would definitely go back.

Jati Home Stay and Gallery

Ubud, Indonesia
60%

A nice hotel, with lovely views from private balconies - however, compared to other home stays that are just as good and closer to town it is very expensive. I booked my first nights stay in Ubud here to ensure I had a room, but moved the next day to somewhere cheaper. However, the room was impeccably clean, lovely large and comfortable bed and a large private bathroom. The hotel is secluded and has great views.

A calm sanctuary in a hectic city! As a lone female traveller I felt safe in the area, the hostel was clean and welcoming with friendly, helpful staff and everything you could need - breakfast, lockers, wifi, comfortable room.... Totally recommended.

Lovely, clean and friendly hotel that is superb value for money. The owners were incredibly helpful with forward booking, day trips and also picked me up from the bus station when I arrived. They even offered to share their breakfast. Clean rooms, wifi downstairs, good area - only a few minutes walk from everywhere you need to go. Totally recommended.

Sam Sen Sam

A lovely hotel that is great value for money. Only about a ten minute walk to main backpacker spots - but so much better for it - quiet, but safe location, clean rooms and bathrooms, wifi throughout, very close to ferry pier for sightseeing. Helpful owners, basic breakfast included - but range of options available. The only (minor) problem is that the walls are thin, but not a problem at all in such a lovely place

Cliff Cottage

Koh Chang, Thailand
77%

Beautiful surroundings & exceptional value for money, but not without fault. Shaun (owner) is fantastic and ready to answer any queries, the other (new) staff were less so, and we had to wait for (expensive) meals. The restaurant has great wifi and a beautiful view, and the huts (we stayed in cheapest) are basic, but functional. The main bathrooms are spotless, but ones nearer to the cheaper huts are tired and cleaned less often. Would recommend, but if I stayed again would pay for better hut.

King Guesthouse

Phnom Penh, Cambodia

Ended up not staying in this hostel as the staff were so rude. I had booked online, and turned up with friends asking for rooms. The owner would not commit to a price for their rooms and would not answer any of our questions. When I said I may leave with my friends as they did not want to stay I was told that they didn't want me anyway. I didn't see the rooms, and did not stay, so cannot comment on those - but felt intimidated by the staff.

Chhaya Hotel

Battambang, Cambodia

Although this hostel looks a little like a prison as you go in, it is fantastic value for money and in the centre of town. The staff organised bicycles to hire, and you are only minutes away from lovely cafes and shops. The room is nothing special, but for a single, en suite room at this price you cannot ask for anything more.

Basic, but good value for money room in the touristy part of HCMC. A shop downstairs caters for all your needs and you are mere minutes away from numerous bars and restaurants. The staff were able to help with my onward journey and helpful in organising a pick up from the train. The room had no window, but was clean, comfortable and had wifi.

Nan Ning City Hostel

Nanning, China
93%

Nanning City hostel became a home away from home, with it's comfortable furnishings, helpful staff and community of occupants. The staff were more than happy to help with further travel from the city, and the kitchen was well stocked with everything you need for small charges. One word of warning, you must print out a map and follow the directions to the letter as the hostel is very difficult to find. I arrived in the middle of the night during a typhoon, & only found it with the help of locals

Good sized, clean room - was good to have the facilities for cooking to save some money as the hostel itself is fairly expensive. However, it is a quick and easy walk to the centre of town, it felt very secure an the staff were very helpful. Highly recommended.

This hostel is a Tram ride away from the central station, but definitely worth the journey. I stayed in a large dorm, and was pleased with the large room, the available lockers & each bed had it's own plug socket & lamp. The only thing we didn't have that had been advertised was a curtain on each bed which would have been great for privacy. shower rooms were plentiful & clean, & the large communal kitchen had everything needed. The staff were helpful and the hostel is right next to a great park

A fun hostel on a boat, with lovely staff. Not only were we given the usual maps, but we also were told where the best and cheapest places to eat are, directions to the supermarket, and even had discount vouchers for the Nemo centre offered to us. Although the room was cosy, it was clean and had everything we needed. The breakfast was plentiful and the other guests were chatty and helpful. Thoroughly recommended.
