The Living Room Otres, Sihanoukville, Cambodia

Krystal is very helpful and runs an inviting place but it is way overpriced for what you get. I realize the price was likely higher at New Year but still no value for the money. We had booked a bungalow with hot water and ended up with no water at all. It is a long walk to the beach area, food is slightly overpriced (she charged us .50 for hot water saying it was due to electricity but then encouraged us to run the shower for 15 minutes to get hot water?).

Thanks for your feedback. We agree that it was unfortunate that you arrived during a time that for the first time our entire area, with so many new guesthouses and therefore more tourists than ever, was experiencing extremely low water pressure during certain times of the day. We had been explaining this to all guests and apologizing. As we discussed, the ability for the hot shower to work is dependent on the water pressure. For this reason, we happily subtracted the extra price for the hot shower room from your bill for your entire stay. The guest in that room the day before reported they had taken several hot showers but after letting the water run a while, which is why we advised you to try the same as there wasn't much we could do at the time about the problem except keep trying. Like you've pointed out, that might seem like a waste of electricity, but we were willing to do anything we could to solve this problem for you. We have since learned about a system that works well and was different from what everyone else had been using, and have invested in and installed it immediately, which has made our pressure very strong so future guests will not have to worry about this. We are now helping inform other guesthouses about our success and others are also sorting out this problem, but we were one of the first actually. Again, we are sorry and it really was unfortunate that you arrived during this particular time. Because we couldn't accommodate your needs, we called around 5 other guesthouses in the area that might have hot showers to try to find you a placement that you might be happier with. We found that most places have cold showers in this price range and/or were fully booked. The only one we could find and informed you about was available for just part of your stay and for 3 times the price you were paying here. We didn't want to see you go, but we did want to make you happy if arranging a stay at a different guesthouse if possible is what we needed to do. Our prices are actually based on what other similar guesthouses, some even without ensuite bathrooms, in the area are charging and were competitive during this top peak time (Christmas/New Years), not necessarily higher. You were staying in one of our unique 2 story cottages with a private downstairs living room, which is different from most other types of bungalows in the area but still in the same price range. Our food prices are competitive, too, but you will find of course that local Khmer restaurants are generally cheaper, while we have a focus on high quality home cooked western dishes that you can't find anywhere else. We are a bit surprised that you didn't find value for the money, because although the maximum capacity for our rooms is 2, we did allow you to add a third party who had been staying at another guesthouse to the room, providing an additional mattress, bedding, and towels completely free of charge. This was something special we did for you that we normally don't do and in the future would probably charge an additional fee to cover the laundry. We hope that overall you enjoyed your visit to Otres and will visit again someday, and again we apologize for the difficulty of this period with the lack of water pressure. Best, Kristel

Ok hostel, a bit out of the way. We did a tour through them and pleased with that. Food is very mediocre. Our major complaint was we booked a 7 hour bus trip through this guest house and were put on the grubbiest, most decrepided bus we have ever experienced and we have travelled in many countries. The bus was unsafe for anyone to be on. We sent them an email and they were going to check into this.

Staff is excellent here...rooms are great although a little expensive. My only complaint would be the extremely poor wifi. Make it stronger and it would be amazing. Very quiet, comfortable and mostly hot water.

Great, big kitchen for guest use. We barely saw the fella working there, but he gave us an excellent map of Otavalo. This building is gorgeous but in pretty shabby condition. Room never cleaned, had to hunt down staff to get TP. Lots of DVD's for use. Noisy traffic.

Staff not friendly at all, gobs of mosquitoes in the room with small net that barely covers the bed. Rooms are small and not well made and it is super noisy as mostly made of 1/8" plywood - walls and floor. We had booked three nights stayed 2 and got out!!

Although English is spoken here, we found this place to be very rundown, rooms are dark and extremely tiny. Something fell under the bed and it was so dusty! We were told by one person that things were available when the next person told us they weren't available.
