Abercorn House Hostel

The only thing good about this hostel is the price and great look and cleanliness. I personally didn't like the showers which were a push to shower style, meaning every 5 seconds you had to push for water. Another bad thing is that dish washing liquid was not provided for the dishes so all the dishes are surely very dirty. Other than that, the reception is not very friendly and security is low as anyone can come and go as they please.

Extremely terrible stay, the worst thus far after travelling to17 cities around NZ. Two good points, free pickup from the airport and ingredients for breakfast. Either than that, terrible from start to finish. Pick up unfriendly and unhelpful.Kitchen small and poorly maintained. We had to find the kitchen ourselves and were not told it was under construction. Water undrinkable-cloudy.Lighting terrible-saving lighting on the stairs but using neons in the rooms.Rooms-unfurnished,low value for price

Hello Pei Ling, sorry to hear that you had such a bad experience staying with us. Guess wen can't be perfect for everybody. As for the kitchens, we are a very small hostel and do have 2 kitchens with signs saying "kitchen" on it and we also explain during check in where the facilities are in the hostel, so I don't know what went wrong in your case. As for the renovations, you do have a point there and we apologize for the inconvenience. Maybe you are not aware of the fact that we had some earthquake activity in the recent year and unfortunately at some stage we had to undergo cosmetic repairs. Luckily our building is structurally very sound and survived all shakes without trouble but some touch up work needed to be done even for us. I m sorry that we had to be in your way a little. As for the water, the tab water is the same tab water as anywhere else in Christchurch as we do not have our own tab water source, so the tab water you were drinking from us would have been the same anywhere else... and by the way, the tab water is absolutely fine in Christchurch. I have to comment on your lightning issue as well, we do not have neons in any of our rooms and the hallway upstairs is working with a motion sensor which works absolutely fine for everybody else and we never had a complaint about the light. The rooms are unfurnished at the moment as we are in a state of refurbishing and we took old furniture out to bring new furniture in. Last but not least, value for money... considering that you paid $28 for your stay and you got picked up from the airport for free (which would be depending on the time of the day between 7,50 and $19 dollars in the best case) as well as having received breakfast in the morning, I would say that $28 is actually an acceptable price and I don't know if you would have gotten it elsewhere cheaper. I am sorry that you had such a bad time here, i really am. For the future i wish you all the best, safe travels Marcus Manager KIWI basecamp
