It was our first day in country and we were pretty disappointed when we weren't welcomed to the hostel; no hello, no welcome, just a business-as-usual give me your passport and sign in. The hostel itself was fine, good location, nice private room, but a smile and a greeting would have gone a long way.
Had a great stay. Really enjoyed the welcoming atmosphere, friendly staff, personal tour of the nearby Lavender hawker center. It was a real treat to have FRESH coffee with breakfast!
No insights, no problems. Just as we expected. They organized transportation for us from Phuket to Penang, but didn't mention how many times we'd have to transfer mini-buses.
We had a lovely one night stay at Gongkaew. Only have a 15 minute walk to the center of town, restaurants, book stores, cafes, but given the small size of Chiangmai this felt a bit far. Our room was lovely, AC, hot water, one of several bungalows surrounding a small courtyard. Staff/family are really friendly. Gave us a ride to the airport for less than a tuk tuk and no hassle. Quiet nights, a good spot for a couple.
Loved it! Phnom Penh and Siem Reap are both loaded with businesses "giving back" and "supporting the local community," and Mad Monkey is no exception, although I don't feel the need to surround my stay here in quotation marks. Honest operation, great facilities, clean room, awesome food, fair prices, a free welcome-to-our-hostel beer, happy hour when it rains, tours organized. An exceptional hostel.
A wonderful stay! I extended by stay for the full week and was thoroughly impressed with nearly everything. A 15-minute minute walk from Long Street makes this place a bit quieter, ideal for those looking for a more tranquil environment. Clean beds, showers, bathrooms. Two ethernet cords provide unlimited free wireless (remember to share!), something you will hardly find at any hostel, cafe, or restaurant in Cape Town. Perfect for self-catering, reliable stove/kitchen equipment. Safe street
