Mezcal Hostel, Cancun, Mexico

8th Mar 2016

Only stayed one night before a flight. Seemed like a nice enough place and was within walking distance of the bus station. Cancun and the party hostel have never really been my scene but it seemed like it attracts a mix of people. The female dorm I stayed in wasn't as nice as it looks online and the large trash can in the ensuite bathroom was overflowing with trash in the evening. Air conditioning turned on by the staff at night a little too strong. Friendly and helpful staff.

El Jardin de Frida, Tulum, Mexico
9.1
4th Mar 2016

I loved el Jardin de Frida! Single beds in the dorms, blankets, good breakfast, lots of spaces for lounging, decent kitchen. It's not perfect (garden can have lots of mosquitoes, the hostel cats always sneak into the rooms and sleep on the beds, it's on the far edge of town), but it is one of my favorite hostels because of the sociability. Communal tables at hostels are genius. It's small enough that you can get to know almost everybody. Not for partiers but perfect for meeting people.

Female dorm has 20 beds (not clear on HW), 2 showers, 2 toilets. Often a queue. Bathroom trash should have been taken out more often. Bathroom construction was going on outside and no water in our dorm during the day without notice. Breakfast just toast/jam and some fruit. It's a big hostel that seems to attract a lot of groups. Staff friendly and helpful but kind of assembly line with so many people. And yet... the hammock areas in the garden and above the pool were sublime.

Not as bad as I feared but definitely nothing to rave about. Staff was helpful enough and the attached cafe was nice. The shared bathrooms are a little weathered. One of the showers has almost no water pressure but the other is fine. Zero atmosphere (there's a common room space on the side of the lobby that you almost can't see because it's always so dark in there).

Really nice place. Comfy beds. They provided so many blankets, I was never cold : ) Shower in the female dorm felt luxurious. Lots of common areas, both indoors and out. Staff really helpful with booking trips and giving advice.

Great place! Stayed in the deluxe female dorm with very comfortable bunks built into the wall and privacy curtains. Large lockers (they provide the key). Bathrooms in that section were really nice. Wonderful breakfast with eggs made to order, beans, salsa, bread, fruit (usually only bananas), cereal, milk, juice, coffee. Lots of common area space. It's too large to be intimately social but easy enough to meet people. There was 1 annoyingly loud night but otherwise fine, depends on the guests!

Oak Hostel Zen, Tokyo, Japan

Very good location: 3-5 minute walk to JR Yamanote line, near Ueno park and Tokyo National Museum. Staff is very professional, friendly, and helpful and the hostel stocks a lot of informative brochures and maps. Limited common spaces in the kitchen and the lobby, which feels like a sterile, hotel lobby. Perfectly functional place to stay but lacks any character and isn't the most inviting place to hang out and meet other travelers.

This place is amazing. Has everything that other K's House hostels have (comfy beds - and here they are tatami mats, even in the dorms; great common areas and kitchen; so clean) plus the hotspring baths! Beautiful setting on the river. Really friendly and helpful staff. The wood interior is such an interesting mix of antique and modern. I was amazed that it exceeded even my high expectations based on all the good things I heard from other travelers. Such a great place to relax for a few days.

Really comfortable, solid bunks in the dorms. Individual power outlets and reading lights. Good wifi. Helpful staff. Cozy common area in the front, good kitchen and dining area. I stayed in four K's House locations around Japan and all were well worth the money.

Shaq Big House, Kanazawa, Japan

24th May 2014

Clean, comfy rooms. Solid bunks and individual outlets. Really great location close to the main restaurant/bar area as well as the park, the garden, and museums. I only spent two nights here and that was not enough! There's plenty to do in Kanazawa and lots of opportunity to get a local experience. Go out or dine in at night with Shaq and the other guests. Get drinks, party, but it's all very relaxed. Shaq can also introduce you to people who offer good price, non-touristy tours around the area.

Solid, spacious bunk beds in the dorms, individual power outlets and reading lights, really clean facilities, good kitchen and dining area. Cozy common room. Friendly, helpful staff. Nice rooftop terrace. Really liked all the K's House locations (4) I stayed at across Japan. So easy to meet other travelers and all were so nice and clean.

Great vibe at Yume Nomad, nice mission and atmosphere. Bunk beds in dorms are a little basic but it's very clean and there are privacy drapes. Relatively small, quiet hostel. Funky cafe/living room area. Join the group dinner to get to know the staff and other guests if they have one during your stay!

So clean. So comfortable. Helpful staff. Extremely solid like all the other K's House locations across Japan, definitely worth your money. Kyoto location has a big, comfortable common area that gets so much natural light and has a big kitchen and outdoor areas as well as a rooftop terrace and a related cafe/bar next door. So easy to meet other travelers and relax here between the endless sight-seeing you can do around Kyoto. Families and people of all ages stay here, welcoming to everybody.

This guest house is pretty basic but run by a very nice and helpful family. It's about a 10 minute walk to the JR Osaka Loop line but in a quiet residential neighborhood where you can get a good feeling for everyday life. There's a small kitchen as well as a dining area with tables but no other common area to hang out in and meet other travelers.

Relaxed guest house run by a helpful family. Metal bunks in the dorms are a bit noisy but the room is spacious enough and the A/C works well. It's on the quieter side of town but inside the moat area and the garden setting makes it feel like a basic but really relaxing retreat. Good, covered outdoor common area where you can easily meet other guests or relax. Owners will drive you to airport or other locations for same price as the official taxis. They advertise tours but are not at all pushy.

Comfortable beds, very clean rooms, clean bathrooms, strong wifi (but only for one device at a time), bar out front and comfortable lounge in the lobby. Nothing really bad to say about this place except that the tours that they sell are in no way a good deal. They seem to put money and effort into promoting themselves and have a lot of loyal fans but I didn't notice a big difference from other modern Bangkok hostels that would justify the hype. Big and impersonal but solid place to stay.

Really love this hostel! Pods are so comfortable and private. The common area / cafe is full of books and photographs. They provide a really well curated map showing the best food, etc. Always provide such helpful advice. So friendly, they know everybody's names and are happy to chat with guests. Get to know Lucas and Joyce! They are awesome people and embody everything that makes Georgetown so vibrant. Part of the new art / cafe scene but also fighting to keep old traditions alive and known.

Very clean hostel with big, comfortable beds and individual power outlets and reading lights. Female dorms and bathroom are in their own wing. Nice rooftop terrace and indoor common space. Lacking in character for my tastes but meets all the flashpacker criteria that they advertise.

Very relaxed and comfortable guest house. Basic A/C room was very spacious and had a mosquito net (it's surprising how many lodgings in Sri Lanka don't provide one even though it's often needed). Staff is friendly and helpful. Very good breakfast (well made omelet or eggs served as you request, plus toast and butter/jams, juice, coffee/tea).

Love this hostel! It's small and friendly so you will meet other guests and get to know the sisters who run the hostel. They are very nice and put so much effort into keeping the place clean and serving a full Turkish breakfast that varies a little each day. I loved the location in a cool neighborhood close to restaurants, bars, the Istanbul Modern, and still a 20-30 minute walk or very quick tram ride away from the historical center. Highly recommend if you like a local atmosphere and breakfast
