Pal's Hostel

Budapest, Hungary

Great place to stay, wonderfully located right in the heart of the city, next to St. Steven's. The hostel is a set of separate apartments which makes it a perfect place to stay if you're looking for peaceful atmosphere. Also, the night bus stopping next to the basilica will allow you to get to the airport to catch an early morning flight (one transfer required).

Free breakfasts were great and the food served by the restaurant downstairs was tasty as well. The whole hostel had a really enjoyable feeling to it. On the downside, to lock your belongings in the cupboard you have to bring your own padlock or buy one at the place. Using the safe also incurs an additional charge. Worst thing for me, you don't get separate electric sockets for each bed in the dorms - if you need to charge your mobile overnight and keep the alarm on, this can be quite unnerving.

Die Wohngemeinschaft

Cologne, Germany

This is the best hostel I've ever stayed in. Extremely clean place, friendly and helpful staff. The standard of a mixed 8 people room is better than singles in many other places. This is not the kind of hostel in which you have heavy parties. The pleasant atmosphere is furthered by little things, e.g. free coffee in the morning, no need to clean the dishes etc. Not the cheapest place but the best value for money. Two drawbacks: no fridge, and not in the city center. Highly recommended!
