Albatross Backpacker Inn

Brilliant hostel. This is the second time I have stayed here, and the atmosphere is unlike anywhere else. Kaikoura itself is such a beautiful place, and the Albatross is a perfect place to base yourself. The staff are all wonderful, and the place is very clean. Very highly recommended.

Brilliant hostel. 2nd time I stayed here, and still excellent. Kitchen and bathrooms very clean, and good size bedrooms with lockers in rooms (though I had forgotten how thin the pillows were)! Lovely staff, very friendly and helpful. Very friendly long term stayers, good if you are travelling alone. Excellent location, within walking distance of everywhere in the CBD. Highly recommended.

Lovely hostel. Stayed here for 4 nights in total, but had to shift to another hostel for 2 nights in the middle, and was very glad to return here. Really welcoming place and very friendly staff.

Stayed here for 2 nights during the Grand Prix weekend when everywhere else was booked. The hostel was clean and the beds were normal metal bunks, but the hostel lacked any real atmosphere. The room I stayed in had some long term stayers who dominated, and the only communal area was right next to reception. The bathrooms were sufficient, but oddly designed so that the water from the shower runs into the toilet cubicles. Overall it is a sufficient hostel, but I wouldn't stay on my own here.

Really welcoming hostel- felt happy as soon as I walked in the door! The staff were friendly and knowledgeable, and there is lots of information around the hostel so you won't be bored. Excellent food court/hawker centre just across the road- you can go there every night and eat something completely different each time! Comfortable beds and individual reading lights, and air con in the bedrooms. Good value for money. An excellent example of a backpacker hostel.

Really lovely hostel- very welcoming. The outdoor area is brilliant, and it has a good size kitchen. There was a fridge in our dorm room which was very useful. Air conditioning and a fan in the room, plus a screen door, so the room can be any temperature you wish. Within walking distance of everywhere in Cairns. Friendly and helpful staff, and loads of free/cheap stuff happening. Really enjoyed my stay here, and would recommend it to anyone!

Budds In Surfers

Surfers Paradise, Australia

Standard backpacker hotel in Surfers Paradise. The room was sparse yet clean, with lockers available for use which was good. Free wifi and breakfast a bonus. Bathrooms very clean during day and evening, but a little messy in the morning before the staff had chance to attend to them. Staff were friendly but I didn't find many of the guests particularly friendly.

Brisbane City YHA

Brilliant example of a large yha hostel. Very clean and well equipped. Because of the size of the hostel if you are a lone backpacker looking to socialise it is not necessarily ideal, but perfect for a bit of peace and quiet. Within walking distance of the transit centre and city centre, and really near a supermarket. You have to pay for wifi, but the costs are reasonable $5 for 24hrs or $10 for 3 days. Excellent hostel.

Really friendly hostel with good communal areas. Kitchen quite small but more than adequate for backpacker cooking! Staff were all really lovely and everywhere was clean and well provisioned.

Good hostel in a lovely part of Melbourne. Excellent neighbourhood within walking distance of everywhere in the CBD. Hostel is quite big so best to cook early or late as the kitchen area can get quite busy. Would be nice if there were a bigger lounge or communal area, but I understand that due to the design of the building that isn't really possible. Very clean and comfortable bedrooms. Have to pay for wifi- $3/hr.

Haka Lodge Queenstown

Wonderful hostel, the best one we stayed in whilst in New Zealand. Stayed in both twin room and dorm room. Twin room was spacious and well equipped (and right opposite the bathroom which was good!) and the dorm room was so comfortable and secure. All the dorm bunks have privacy curtains and lockers which was excellent. Definitely recommended if you are staying in Queenstown!

Interesting hostel with lots of character. Very secure and quiet at night. The only thing that would make it better is if there was a dedicated women's toilet on the ground floor.

Lovely hostel. We were here for less than 12 hours in total, but the whole atmosphere was wonderful and everyone made us feel completely at home. Would definitely stay here again.

Good hostel. Clean bathrooms and rooms. We'd booked a twin room and were given a double which was slightly annoying, but other than that our stay was fine. Near to supermarket and Polynesian spa.

Good hostel, quite basic but clean and in a nice location (loads of excellent boulangeries near by!) Perfect as a base to explore Paris, particularly if you are only going to use your room for sleeping.
