Hlemmur Square

Reykjavik, Iceland

Great hostel! Clean rooms, good beds and heaps of charging points, good kitchen, nice common space and great bar (heaps of Icelandic craft beers). Very friendly staff and great location on the edge of the city centre right next to a bus interchange. Hard to fault.

Bus Hostel Reykjavik

Reykjavik, Iceland

Cheap and decent, but nothing spectacular. Dorms were clean with good beds, but limited charging points. Staff were a bit impersonal and dismissive. Location is average - close to buses but a decent walk from the city and in a very dull area.

Fabrizzios Terrace Barcelona

Barcelona, Spain

Great. One of the cheapest in Barcelona and still managed to pull of a great level of service and facilities with a fantastic atmosphere to boot. Only slight grumble is the shortage of toilets/showers (although its no worse than anywhere else...) but then the kitchen was excellent. Highly recommended!

X Hostel Budapest

Budapest, Hungary

Solid but not amazing hostel. Clean, well run and in a nice area not too far from stuff. That said, the almost constantly hungover staff gave me distinct flashbacks to uni share-houses, which may or may not be your thing - it's more of a party hostel than they'd like to think...

Old Town Hostel East Wing

Kotor, Montenegro

Long story short, the first hostel I've ever given 100%... Perfect location in a great town, fun, knowledgeable and professional staff, amazing atmosphere with something interesting going on every night I was there. Honestly there's just nothing I could nock a point off for. HIGHLY recommended!

Buffalo Backpackers

Pristina, Kosovo

Fantastic! The owner/manager Chelsea was amazing, I've never met someone with so much passion for the role of host. She's an absolute wealth of knowledge about Prishtinë and Kosovo, and great company to boot. Very social atmosphere without ever descending to 'party hostel' and the place also seems to be a hangout for some of Prishtinë's expat community, which creates a really interesting dynamic. Don't be turned away by the lack of reviews!

Urban Hostel & Apartments

Skopje, Macedonia

Mixed feelings about Urban Hostel... Very clean, great rooms and a gigantic bathroom (care for a spa?), and the staff were amongst the friendliest I've met in Europe.. That said, it's a fair walk from the Skopje centre (although it is on the bus route and theres plenty of bars and stuff close by) and the building had a sterile feel.

Hostel Mostel

Sofia, Bulgaria

Generally very good - clean, great staff, great location and cool old building. Only real complaints are that there was a shower but no toilet in my dorm, and purely subjectively, I felt it had that slightly soulless feel that larger hostels had. Be aware, breakfast is NOT included in the booking price for cheaper rooms.

Hikers Hostel Plovdiv

Plovdiv, Bulgaria

Fantastic! Excellent spot right in the old town; quiet but super close to basically everything. Friendly, helpful staff who were a wealth of knowledge on Plovdiv, Bulgaria and the region generally. Cosy and characterful without being pokey or messy. Only possible complaint was limited toilets/showers, with none on the same level as the big dorm. Honestly, Hikers Hostel made Plovdiv one of the highlights of my trip so far.

Mavi Guesthouse

Istanbul, Turkey

Outstanding spot in one of istanbul's most interesting areas, and friendly, knowledgeable staff happy to help with info and bookings. Very cramped though and the big dorm ridiculously so - I had to climb over people's beds to reach my own. Likewise ghe 'common room' was tiny. Upstairs toilet and showers were disgusting, and if it rained heavily water leaked inside. Overall I'd hesitantly recommended for price and location alone.

Tallinn Backpackers

Tallinn, Estonia

Great location in the old town of Tallinn. Fun/friendly staff. Clean and very comfy - big lounge space and the bathroom for my dorm had both a sauna and a spa-bath. Keep in mind THIS IS A PARTY HOSTEL - great place to have fun/make friends but perhaps a bit full-on for some. Only negative was not enough toilets - only one in the lounge space (awkward behind the reception desk) and only one for a 12 person dorm sharing a room with the shower, so good luck in the morning. Overall - recommended!
