Stayokay Amsterdam Vondelpark, Amsterdam, Netherlands

The staff were friendly and helpful, great location, but it's a drab scene for solo backpackers. The place is so large that there is a loss of a sense of community, making the social scene hollow and impersonal. The beds are assigned in the rooms, which was problematic. Instead of taking assigned beds, many travelers took the most comfy beds, leading to logistical problems (I swapped beds 3 times as a consequence of random ppl who kept sleeping in my bed). Not recommended for solo travelers.

Thanks for your review. Sometimes it happens that a fellow traveler is sleeping in the wrong bed. The reception staff can help you with it. Please come to the reception next time so we can fix it for you;) I hope you liked Amsterdam and we would like to see you next time! Have a great day

The place closes down at night. The hot tub closes at 9pm and the chill-lounge with the hammocks seemed to always be locked. I usually got back to the hostel at 7pm, then went to eat and shower. By the time I'd want to use these things it would be 9:30 and everything was closed. Management should consider orientating activities around their guests. The showers were meh but overall comfortable and met some cool ppl.

My advice - Leave Zurich to the bankers! The hostel was clean and fairly priced... for Zurich. Like all HI Hostels, the place is way too big, which creates a strange (non-existent) social dynamic. There's a mix of group tours, strange personalities, and people only staying one night as a consequence of the convenient flights in and out of the area.

This place is gold! It's quaint size allows for an intimate experience with the city and makes it easy to meet other travelers. It conveys the easy-going, upbeat mentality of the people of Budapest. Would highly recommend staying here.

It's a party hostel. Not the best place to experience the city or culture. Really good if you want to get wasted and mingle with the opposite sex in a drunken stupor.

Showers were really strange. Poor drainage caused excess water pooling. At certain periods of the day it smelt musty. Likely will be infested with mold in the near future. It's a shame because it seemed newly renovated. Horrible design by whoever built that facility and a waste of money. Overall very clean hostel. Very difficult to meet people. Very large and impersonal. You'll eventually meet someone at the bar but layout, size, and culture is not ideal for solo backpackers.

A great experience if youre looking to stay in a capsule hotel for a night or two. The culture is kind of weird. Since its filled with Japanese business men people typically dont speak to each other. All the same, it was a relaxing stay. It was nice taking a bath, then getting into the pjs they supply you with and heading to sleep.

If you are going to Osaka you have to stay at J'Hoppers. Mr Yano will make your stay. He is absolutely hillarious. You will know what I mean when you get there. The atmosphere is great and the staff is very helpful. Just take my word for it and book it.

Its not in the ideal area for partying, but is still in a central location and easy enough to get around. Again, it could be kind of tricky for going out because the subway closes at 1am, so youll have no way of getting back to your hostel until 530am or so, unless you take a taxi. The facilities and staff were great. Theres an awesome picture (mural) that wraps around the entire common room that is really cool.

Its a standard hostel. The atmosphere was great and the location was perfect. There was a couple of problems with the way the OWNER decides to run his hostel. 1) There were a couple of problems with double booking. The management really has to sort out updating websites, perhaps through a program. 2) There was only one staff member who was expected to work 24 hours a day. His job wasnt that difficult but its a bit overwhelming to have one person keep up with everything at all times.

Fantastic hostel. Tricky to find, but worth it. I was so glad to be away from the overly touristic khao san area. It was easy to meet people and in a central location next to transit. Stay here, its good.

The hostel just opened recently and the staff is working very hard to make it a top class hostel. Its a very fun place to stay and very easy to meet people. its a party hostel but was also comfortable. The privacy of the capsule style dorms is kinda cool. You can shut the blinds and get some sleep easy enough with earplugs. The walls are open, allowing bugs to walk in and out. The place is clean, but inevitably there were bugs. Also, the door locks are archaic and can be improved.

The Siem Reap Hostel, Siem Reap, Cambodia

2nd Apr 2014

Best hostel I stayed in during my 2.5 month backpacking trip of east asia. The pool, the bar, the staff, the people. All great. Id recommend renting a mtn bike from the convenience store and biking the Angkor Park small loop (35km). Its a way better experience than seeing the temples by tuktuk. Much more interaction between the local people, and less with the salespeople that are3 pushy and wait by the temple entrances. Try both and youll see.

Its a typical backpackers hostel and is comfortable and easy to meet people, but not up to par with the Siem Reap hostel nearby. I found the staff very confusing and not very helpful. They seemed to speak in riddles and couldnt give any useful recommendations, which was surprising because Siem Reap is a very small place. My favourite bar nearby was X Bar. It has a halfpipe on the roof, which is cool. I stayed in the neighbouring Siem Reap Hostel for 5 days and loved it.

Kota Kinabalu is such a charming town! Masada is a typical backpackers hostel that was a great place to meet people and a fantastic base for day trips around KK, or even further. I would recommend basing yourself in KK, as it is more friendly and much nicer than Sandakan. Two thumbs up for Masada.
