For the 2 days we were there it rained constantly, and there is very little to do when it rains. We had booked for 3 nts but were unable to arrive in time for the first night, and had telephoned & emailed to confirm we would be arriving the next day. Despite this, they were not expecting us - they said they hadn't received our booking at all, and were reluctant to honour the rate that had been agreed on HW. Place is tired, and even if the sun was shining, the beach is not that great.

Lovely place with great facilities and friendly helpful staff. We stayed in a private double ensuite room which was lovely in all respects, although the cabin bed wasn't ideal. Would happily go back.

This was an ok place to stay. we didn't get the warmest of welcomes, but when we needed anything, the staff did help. Room was ok - motel style place which was all adequate but a bit tired. Location was good although neighbouring hostels were quite noisy.

We stayed in a nice clean functional double ensuite room. While the corridor outside was beautifully air conditioned, this did not extend to the room, and there was no ventilation whatsoever. Even the windows didn't open which made the room stuffy to the point of suffocation, as it was very warm when we were there. Other than that, the place was great and the staff were very friendly and helpful.

Just about the best place we have stayed on our trip. The views over the bay were to die for, while the place was spotlessly clean. Kitchen and other facilities were splendid and Danny the manager couldn't have been more helpful. It is a little out of the city, but on a great train line in - if you're there over a weekend, check out the three day train ticket. Would absolutely go back here again.

Don't be put off by the psychedelic colour scheme - this is a great place to stay. Our host Dory could not have been more welcoming, while the facilities were spot on. Great kitchen and communal areas, comfortable and clean room!

This was a perfect motel room, with fantastic facilities. Everything we needed was inside the room, which was spotlessly clean, and very comfortable. The reception staff were very welcoming. Would happily stay here again.

Top notch hostel! Squeaky clean, excellent facilities. Our en suite room was perfect and the staff couldn't do more to help. Probably the best hostel we have stayed in on our travels!

Didn't really live up to expectations. Felt a bit grubby. Staff were excellent and really helpful. Facilities were ok, but computers very restricted and wifi very slow. Room itself (double en suite) was fine but little natural light. Good location near to station and could walk to opera house and harbour which was lovely. While this might seem overly critical we never felt the need to complain.

Quiet, well located hostel - feels like a house rather than a hostel, so atmosphere is made by the guests. Suited us just fine and would recommend as somewhere to stay!

Excellent place to stay. Superb welcome and staff. So much included. BBQ the first night we were there, pies and sarnies the next. Location is a little out of town but free bus service makes getting around dead easy! Can't recommend this place highly enough!

This stay went wrong from the start as despite following the instructions in the confirmatory email regarding the free pick up, no one was dispatched to get us until we telephoned the hostel after waiting an hour. We never met up with the driver so took a taxi. The lady checking us in barely said a word to us at reception. There were so many 'rules' around the place it felt more like a school than a hostel, and everything but everything is charged for: Internet, towels, using a credit card (5%)

View Property Reply

Dear Richard I am sorry that you had a bad experience at our hostel but you did not arrive with a smile on your face or pleasant attitude. We offer a FREE pick up service but we did not have your flight details at the time. As soon as you called the driver was send to the airport to fetch you within 20 minutes (he walked around for about 20-30 minutes looking for you) but you decided to take a taxi and not wait so you arrived with a bad attitude and in case you forgot, we gave you a FREE drop off to the airport in return. I am not sure to the many "rules" that you refer to but we only expect you to clean up in the kitchen when you make a mess and not to smoke in the rooms and indoors, which is a common law all over. You try and run a hostel without minimal rules and see what happens.......YES, we are actually running a business and not everything is FREE. We cahrge a once off admin fee for internet that was only R20 for the TWO days you stayed with us and since we are not a hotel we offer towels at a small rental fee of R10 per towel to wash after usage. Good luck with your travels, The owner

This is very much a surfer's hostel, and as non-surfers, we didn't quite fit in, but nonetheless this was a good place to stay, and the staff made us feel welcome. The beach front location was very good and the views were fantastic.

This is very much a guesthouse, not a hostel. That said, the room was fine, but the restaurant and food was ordinary. No wifi, but you can use the inhouse computer for a price. Good location and staff were always happy to help.

Wonderful time at Karoo Soul. Friendly and helpful staff, great facilities, lovely room, amazing views. The only thing I could be slightly critical of was the wifi connection which was a little temperamental, but was good enough to allow access to all we needed. Would definitely recommend this place.

A good lively place to stay, but not the quietest!! The music from the bar went on late into the night, and one night we were there, some people decided to have a pool party at 4 in the morning. That aside, we really enjoyed our time there. The staff were friendly and helpful, and the facilities, including the wifi and the computer, were all excellent. Very happy to recommend this place.

Had a lovely time at Banghoek Place. The staff were welcoming and were always on hand to answer questions. Security was good and facilities were also spot on. It was about a 20 minute walk to the city centre but it was an easy walk regardless of the time of day or night. Very happy to recommend Banghoek Place, and would also heartily recommend the Easy Rider wine tour as well, which runs from here - well worth the day out!

This hostel was perfectly acceptable without being outstanding. It was well located on the main road, but that did mean it suffered from traffic noise. The staff were happy to help if we had any questions. The room was a good size, but had nowhere to hang or fold clothes. The list of house rules, while understandable, seemed to be a bit severe. Overall, we would recommend this place, but it was really just good as a place to stay.

Really enjoyed our brief stay at the Backpack. Was just what we were looking for as we started our tour. The only thing we could be slightly negative about was the noise. We were in the Buffalo room which was very close to reception, the kitchen and bar area, but if it had really bothered us we would have asked to move. The staff were so helpful and welcoming and the place had a great atmosphere. Would happily go back. It has set the standard for the rest of our travels.
