Cheers Hostel

Istanbul, Turkey

You can see the Hagia Sofia from the rooftop bar - nothing more surreal than having a nice beer and reflecting on the 1500 years of history that passed just a stones throw away. The staff are friendly if a bit sarcastic (probably a cultural humor thing). The rooms were nice with comfortable bed. The hostel could do with more powerpoints near the beds. I dont like leaving my phone out to charge in the middle of the room. Good party/chill out vibe. The rooms are quiet but the rooftop bar lively.

Hostel One Sants

Barcelona, Spain

This hostel had excellent staff and a great free dinner (as opposed to free breakfast) policy - totally suits a party town. The rooms were very clean, and the staff did its best to spread people out - I went in low season and got a room upgrade which was nice. In terms of atmosphere I met some very nice people travelling using this hostel. Also, great internet and cooking facilities (if you want to do your own). Totally recommend this place.

Caledonian Backpackers

Edinburgh, Scotland

A very nice hostel. Individual lockers and spacious rooms make for a pleasant stay. Staff are varied, some emo ones who don't smile and a bit zombie like. It can also be pretty far up the stairs, I had a backpack so no problem, but I saw a girl with a big bag struggle to get it up: it would have been nice of staff offered to help, especially some three were two at desk. Breakfast was great, plenty and goes late. Location is great, can walk to main sites easily. good value hostel.

The Walrus Hostel

London, England

Rooms are cramped but all the sites are walking distance away - it's a compromise. Great free breakfast and good atmosphere in the pub at night, but rooms are quiet. One of the toilet rooms has no curtain which is off putting when there are people standing on the roof just outside. Hotel generally clean but there arent many bathrooms so they fill up quickly. The key is that this hostel is really close to everything and it is great value for that.

Hotel was great for security, wrist bands. Rooms were clean enough although air conditioner only turned on at 9 pm and turns off around check out time (so it's impossible to sleep in due to the heat). Breakfast was OK. Staff were nice. Biggest draw back is lack of things to do within walking distance. 15 min by bus to the beach, longer to some others. If you want to experience a resort town then best splurge on a resort, for more budget conscious a different brach side city would be better.

Merida, Mexico

Nomadas is in an excellent location. It's only 5 min to the main square and 15 min to the bus station. The staff is excellent, on arrival I was provided with very helpful information on how to go to Mayan ruins and other attractions by myself (as well as a handy bus time table). Facilities were good with a nice communal area with kitchen, although there are many bugs flying around, but that's more to do with the climate, than lack of cleaning. There also a nice pool. Bathroom is a bit exposed.

Hostel Mundo Joven Catedral

Mexico City, Mexico

A nice hotel in the heart of the 'historical centre'. Walking distance to many major attractions and easy to take subway to the suits more further afield. The bathrooms were clean enough and there were individual lockers in each room. Internet was fast enough to stream which was great. A nice roof top bar for meeting people. Breakfast is basic but adequate. Staff could have given a more in depth introduction to the sites (I was given a mask without much explanation). Overall a good hostel.

Thanks for your comments and happy travels!!

Excellent hostel. Walking distance (a near non existent term for Houston!) to bar area (gay and straight). Hertz car rental also walking distance (important if you want to see alot). Good directions on places to go in Houston. Staff were helpful. Everything really clean. Breakfast is awesome too. They provide fresh biscuits (an American version of a British scone). Also nice fresh milk for the coffee. I stayed for a day but wish I'd cut one day out of New Orleans to very one extra day here.

This hostel has a great vibe. It's awesome to get to meet people to go out with to party. In terms of cleanliness it's best to shower right after the cleaners come. In the dorms the bathrooms get dirty quickly. There are only lockers in the main house. It would be better if near every bed. Excellent staff and a really good value cheap breakfast. Easy access on the street car to new Orleans. This hostel has a grungy feel to it but this totally suits new Orleans.

New York, USA

Great little guesthouse. Very flexible. The bathroom was kept clean. I had a flight at midnight and they said just keep the key until I need to leave (so very chilled). 4 people in a room was great. Walking distance to WTC and subway to go uptown (museums and Broadway). Good food options neaeby. Great concierge. A highly recommended place.

Duo Housing DC

Washington DC, USA

Anti-socialising and fun hostel. Many strange rules. Overkill re agreeing to hotel rules. There is no legal need to acknowledge terms again on check in. Weird manager\owner has cameras he uses to watch people in hostel. Immediately after 10pm I saw a staff member head into the kitchen to tell a couple to stop drinking their one bottle of beer each (the camera caught them). Inconsistent staff at least two unknowledgable and rude. Some nice o eswho knew where to eat and the sights.

Good location for the main tourist stuff. A 25 min bus/taxi ride to Castro for the gay clubbing though. Good communal vibe and staff are pleasant if a but aloof. They keep the place clean and you can see them cooking every night. Common area is great as are the super fast computers. Excellent kitchen to cook your own food too.

Lub d Bangkok Silom

Bangkok, Thailand

Good location in gay area; can walk to silom 2 and 4 etc. A bit far to grand palace (but who comes to Thailand for that?). Stayed in twin and double room. Clean. Good facilities. Staff are fine. Good mix of Indian, Thai and other cuisine nearby. Good common area downstairs.

Penzy Guesthouse

Koh Samui, Thailand

This is a nice guesthouse - it's a nice relief from the busy mainstream, my bf and myself took a private room and it was very relaxing. Penzy is really nice and helpful and the beach is quite close. One of the best guesthouses on the island.

Siem Reap Rooms

Siem Reap, Cambodia

Excellent guesthouse. From the moment our friendly driver picked us up to checkout we felt at home here. Staff is very friendly and chilled but still professional. Excellent recommendations of things to do. Rooms very clean. Location is 10 min walk to pub street (1 min by tuk tuk) which is great. Far enough to be out of hubbub but close enough to party all night. Lovely bakery with fresh pastries nearby - very local but highly recommended! Perfect place.

The Mad Monkey

Phnom Penh, Cambodia

This hostel was good. In terms of location it's located between the river/pub area and the genocide museum. So if sightseeing is more important than being in a busy area for night life then this is a good choice (good cheap massage place nearby too). Staff were helpful and friendly. We arrived at 1am and there was some confusion about our booking but it was sorted out. Food was good and cheap - a nice mix of Western and Khmer dishes on offer (the amok was delicious).

Diep Anh Guesthouse

Ho Chi Minh, Vietnam

Excellent hostel. Friendly staff, great location. They are able to help with bookings for trips and the washing is reasonably priced. Good food nearby and not far to the attractions. Excellent choice.
