First, I have to say that our reservation was messed up, not once, but twice. Everything was ok when we showed the Hostelworld mail, but still. Then, you have to know this is a very big hostel, so very organized but kind of cold. Breakfast common area is a total mess in the morning because there's so much people. Our dorm was actually very stinky. And even if it was "mixed", I was the only girl, which was weird. But clean bathroom, and impressive activity programs, and very cool common areas.
We enjoyed very much our stay at Cabins El Pueblo. The owners are wonderfully nice and professionnal (even doing a laundry late the night of our arrival). Don't hesitate if they offer to take you to their plantation : say yes ! (the coffee you drink at the hostel are from their own production). Also, good location, not far from shops, bus terminal or other things, even if the town is small. Very, very good atmosphere.
Totally top-notch. Excellent staff (actually a family with interesting history), nice, attentivem everything you want. Place is not clean, it is immaculate. In fact, more of an hotel than an hostel, but cheap. We had a private room with shared bathroom, but, actually the bathroom was just at our door, in a little private corridor. Beautiful patio to eat breakfast, which is delicious. Great place, definitely recommend it. Also, lots of good restaurants around. This is a perfect place to stay.
First, the welcoming was really bad. Not even basic polite answers. Strange thing : we decided to speak English with the owner instead of Spanish, his attitude became a bit better. But actually, the owner makes the atmosphere of the place so bad it's astonishing. Once, we heard him ranting hard after some guests complained about the cold showers and the crowded kitchen. Even saying they're stupid, and "this is a hostel, not a hotel". Well, yes, but one of the worst hostel I've ever stayed in.
Very good hostel. Very attentive even before ou arrival, we had all the information we needed and even more (such as bus time schedule and everything). Very good, nice, and available staff. Clean rooms and bathrooms, lot of common space, garden, TV room with big sofas, dining-room, big kitchen. (and the little plaza in front is always full of taxis, very useful !) Very good atmosphere too, and a big mall and lots of place to eat at less than 3 minutes walking. Recommended !
The biggest problem what our room : a double facing the street, with no isolation at all. So we had all the noises from the street, and the window was so bad that it was very cold (even during day-time) and full (full !) of mosquitos. Actually when entering the room, we were puzzled by the dozens of dead insects on the wall but we understand why's that after. We decided to sleep with repellant on after the first night. But staff okay and good location. However, I don't recommend.
Sleeping here is giving money to someone who does not do his job. On the first day, after a plane which had departed at 4 a.m., we arrived at 9 a.m. at this hostel and were forced to go out. The man refused to let us in before 12, and even refused to let us wait in the breakfast room (no common room except this one). This whole stay was a joke : no breakfast because of an "accident", no towels because of a "laundry problem", the man was never in the hostel before late in the evening. Real Bad.
People here are nice, but really not professional. The hostel is not 20 minutes from town, but 40. There is the possibility of a transfer from airpot or bus terminal, but be prepared to wait one hour. Never use the laundry service, as clothes are put in an old building with an open roof and no door, even in rain season (after three days, even knowing that I was going to a trek, my clothes were wet and stinky, of course, but still made me pay the laundry). I would not recommend this place.
Arty's guesthouse is a practical place : nor far from the city center, located right on the main avenue. Is you come for Carnaval (10-11-12 feb.), just d'ont be surprised : it takes place just in front of Arty's guesthouse, and you will have to cross it to enter (beware the water fights). The staff is very nice en professional. The only problem is the showers ; all are in one room only, and quite far from several rooms, even on a different story for some of them.Very practical little shop inside
Hostel Magico was the worst experience during our all trip. We arrive after a trek and night bus and were just hoping to sleep. But it was terrible : everything was so dirty ! Beds, room, bathrooms, everything. The bathrooms were horrible : hairs everywhere, sticky spots. And our beds were so dirty, and insects came crawling out when I opened my bed. The worst was the staff, who just didn't care and refused to change our sheets. My only advice is to never go there. Sincerely.
This hostel was just good. The room, on the roof, was clean and spacious enough. The bathrooms were just outside, and cleaned very often, nearly each time somebody used it, actually. The staff say to us that maybe it could be noisy at night because of a bar just beside of our room, but it was okay (in Arequipa, you hear more of the cars in the street than of the bar, it seems). The staff was also very nice for us when we had to wake up at 2 in the morning to go to a trek.
The staff is really nice and funny. This hostel also has good deals for eating, as everything is kind of expensive in this area. The location is perfect in the oasis, it is the most practical place to eat, walk, and enjoy the laguna. Desert night hostelling also help you prepare activities, for a good price. One of their driver, Edwin, who can be the one to take you to visit wineries and the desert (with a buggy) is so very cool.
