Great location on a busy if touristy hutong, but with quieter and more authentic hutongs nearby. Really handy location for getting the underground as well, only 5mins walk. The free breakfast isn't really worth getting out of bed for, but it's free! It's great for organising activities, went on the trip to the Great Wall at Simatai which was really cool, one of the highlights of our trip! Nice common area, inside and outdoor, for meeting up with other travellers.

Lovely guesthouse in lovely Pingyao, well worth staying in for a few days. Great for meeting other travellers. Beautiful traditional courtyard with red lanterns, perfect for eating their great selection of breakfast and friendly staff with fantastic English. Nice tables out the front, great for people-watching and having some super cheap beer. At a quieter end of a busy street. The room was so pretty and ornate with a lovely, comfy traditional Chinese bed. Great spot, hope to stay again.

Han Tang House

Xi'an, China

Relatively expensive for a dorm, but the most comfortable bed I have slept in in a long time and the nicest shower of any hostel I've ever been to! If you're sick of the 'shower head beside the toilet' situation, treat yourself to this place! The food is quite expensive for China, but is really yummy if you are pinning for some Western style grub! Great place to meet lots of other travellers!

This hostel is one of a kind in China. Fantastic place to meet up with other travellers, amazing bar with a great outside area. Lovely, friendly staff with brilliant English who are at hand to help book trains and buses, there's brilliant info-folders at hand that inspire trips elsewhere, we ended up diverting our trip to Inner Mongolia thanks to all the info that was provided! Amazing food, so yummy and a great selection of DVDs to chose from! And the cute little kittens, best hostel ever!

Yangshuo Outside Inn

Yangshuo, China

Fantastic guesthouse! Lovely location outside of Yangshou, a great place to unwind and chill out,so tranquil being woken up by roosters, a much-needed break to the countryside after sleeping in congested Chinese cities. The food is great, banana pancakes for breakfasts and cheap beer. The room was gorgeous, really comfy and lovely bathroom! Only thing to note is that it is 4km outside of the town, but it's a beautiful walk or cycle into the town and a great base to explore the countryside from.

Fantastic location, only a short walk from uber cool Fitzroy where there's lods of awesome bars and vintage shops and lovely little cafes. 10 minute walk into the city centre and across from lovely park where there's lots of possums at night! The rooms could do with a bit of a spruce up, and is a popular spot for long-term guests working in the city, which can be a bit awkward for meeting up with other travellers.

Liberty Guest House

Lovely guesthouse run by a lovely woman who was so helpful booking restaurants and organising early-morning tuktuks for us. In a nice quiet neighbourhood, feels quite off the beaten track but just a short walk away from the night market. The room had fantastic air conditioning and was so spacious, enough room to unload our backpacks for a few days!

NapPark Hostel at Khao San

Clean, spacious dorms and nice outside area but not a great place to meet other travellers, unless you're part of a big group of gap year students coming from the islands. Relatively expensive for a dorm for what you get. Within stumbling distance from the infamous Khao San if that's what you're into
