Bambook Bamboo Guesthouse

Varna, Bulgaria

A bit far from Golden Sands/Varna, but they do pick you up in Golden Sands for free. Also if you need groceries, they will drive you to the store. Definitely a great place to chill out and relax, with fresh grapes and peaches in the garden. We ended up staying two more nights because we loved the hostel so much. Golden Sands itself was a bit touristy, but this was an awesome haven to relax and do absolutely nothing.

Heynow Hostel Old Town

Krakow, Poland

Close to the central square - but almost too close. Every hour on the hour, there's that annoying trumpet player, and if the windows are open, it'll wake you up even with earplugs. Not many people in the common room, which was weird, as it was cushy and comfy. During the summer it got pretty hot in the rooms. Friendly staff and free breakfast (toast).

Kiev Central Station

Kiev, Ukraine

Great hostel! It's a bit far from the central square and the metro, but there's an awesome underground bar nearby where the waitresses dress up like nurses and the bartenders like doctors. The hostel staff is awesome and helpful. From the bus station, it's a bit far, and the taxis will try to rip you off. Better to arrive/depart by train (which is walking distance).

Hollywood Home Hostel

Lviv, Ukraine

Showers were either scalding hot or freezing cold and sometimes only dribbled water out of the shower head. But they have free laundry! Cooking facilities are not great, as there is only an electric hotplate. Very nice and helpful staff. Note that the hostel is up 5 flights of stairs, so if you're lazy and/or have a huge bag, be forewarned.

One World Hostel

Krakow, Poland

(positives) - Staff is very friendly - Very social common room - Close to train, bus, old town - Cheap laundry (negatives) - Ridiculously hot in the summer, most windows don't open all the way (blocked by beds, furniture) - 2 toilets (men), little privacy in the shower area - No lower age limit: some weird Dutch guy had 3 of his kids with him (from age 5 - 12) tips: Do not stay in the 8-bed dorm. The 10-bed has more floor space!

Hostel Wolna Chata

Gdansk, Poland

This place is GREAT! I ended up staying two extra nights, I had so much fun. Very clean, quiet, eco-friendly place. The staff are super-nice and extremely helpful (please be kind to them! They work so hard!). 20 min walk to the beach, 2 stops from Sopot, 6 stops from old town Gdansk. Free breakfast, beautiful garden, they rent bicycles. Would stay here again in a heartbeat.

Poco Loco Hostel

Poznan, Poland

The staff were super-nice and accommodating! From what I remember, I had a great time here. Just be careful about drinking vodka with the locals and the other Polish travelers - I ended up passing out on the couch for 3-4 hours because we Americans can't handle it. They have it all on should ask to see it.

2A Hostel

Berlin, Germany

A little far from the attractions and nightlife, but right next to the metro. Staff were friendly and helpful. Rooms were uncomfortably hot, but after asking, the reception brought us a fan. Check-out was 11:00am, but I was locked out of my key-locker before the check-out time. The hostel is HUGE, with 4 floors, 10 rooms/floor (?) and who knows how many beds per room. Difficult to meet other travelers unless they were in your room, in the kitchen, or by chance in the lounge.

Dink's Place Hostel

Hvar, Croatia

I booked 3 nights, and ended up staying for 8, it was so good! Awesome place, beautiful balcony, great cooking facilities, super clean. My only disappointment was that Dink wasn't at his place (he was dealing with some school stuff).

Hostel Kojic-Bar

Bar, Montenegro

Make sure to e-mail the hostel owner if you are arriving by bus! Depending on where you are coming from (in my case, Kosovo) tell the bus driver to stop the bus next to the restaurant "mimosa" - the hostel is 50m up, next to the supermarket GMG. We told the owner we would be arriving at 5:00am, but he was sleeping and didn't answer the door until 6:30. Other than that, the place is super clean and very nice. More of a private room deal.

City Hostel Prizren

Prizren, Kosovo

Geldim is awesome. He'll treat you to beer, homemade wine and raki, and will answer any of your questions about the town. One small issue: showers were intermittently hot or cold - not sure if I was taking showers after everyone used up the hot water....? Didn't really matter. We got TWO clean towels that were nice and soft. Soap and shampoo were included!

Berat Backpackers Hostel

Berat, Albania

Great hostel! Has a ton of character, and the staff (at current time, a couple from the US) were friendly, helpful and attentive. Great breakfast! I actually extended my stay because I enjoyed it so much at this place. Things to note are that the short path to the hostel is a bit lumpy, so wear sensible shoes and know that you'll have to carry any rolling luggage.

SR Backpackers

Saranda, Albania

SR Backpackers is more than just a hostel - it's Tomi's place, and everyone receives the royal treatment upon arrival.. Tomi himself cooks breakfast every day, is obsessive about the hostel's cleanliness, and will go way out of his way to help you with ANYTHING you need, no problem! He will walk you to the bus stop and will arrange any tour you want. For your 1-2 day stay in Saranda, SR Backpackers is the place to be. Tomi will ensure that your stay is memorable, guaranteed.

Great place! Staff is very helpful and attentive.

Funky Monkey Hostel

Vientiane, Laos

Nice place, but it's turned into a bit of a party guesthouse, what with music and drinking all hours of the night. Fun, if you're into that sort of thing.

Tranquility Guesthouse

Sihanoukville, Cambodia

Great location, but the plumbing for the sink is atrocious. Rats and cockroaches everywhere. Staff is great, very friendly and helpful.
