Hatters Hostel- Liverpool

Liverpool, England

Great hostel at a fantastic value. Good location - within walking distance of all the attractions with all the necessary amenities - nice-sized kitchen with free tea and coffee and all the required cooking materials, a 24-hour computer space, and lots of common areas. The common area cat is also a huge perk. And the free breakfast is one of the best I've had - cereals, muffins, croissants, and Nutella, and a great coffee machine. Definitely recommend Hatter's and hope to return some day.

St Christopher's Greenwich

London, England

A forty-minute tube trip from Victoria Coach Station, but right next to the metro stop and a five minute walk from the center of Greenwich and all its attractions. A great value, especially considering inflation in London - free breakfast, wifi, nice facilities and helpful staff. The bar downstairs is perfect for a cheap bite to eat or a few drinks before going out, and the lounge in the basement is equipped for movie nights. A good branch of St. Christopher's.

Feetup Garden House Hostel

Barcelona, Spain

Had an incredible time at Garden House Hostel. The staff is terrific - very friendly, accommodating, and treat guests like friends. Location is a bit from the city center, but the two metro stops nearby make all attractions very accessible and the neighborhood is safe with grocery stores and small bars and restaurants. The atmosphere in the hostel is relaxed and comfortable; we were more than happy to spend a night in with other hostel-goers. Highly recommend this hostel and would love to return

Thousand Sunny

Rome, Italy

What make this hostel great are the value and the staff. One of the best prices you'll find in Rome, very casual atmosphere, and likely the friendliest group of people in charge. The location isn't the center of everything, but the metro station is a five minute walk and there are plenty of grocery stores in the neighborhood. The facilities were a bit underwhelming - only one bathroom and a small kitchen, but in three days there wasn't a problem. I would definitely stay here again.

Can't speak highly enough about my stay at La Controra. Nice facilities (the showers are unisex locker-room style), free wifi and included breakfast were perks of the stay. It's not directly in the center of the city, but public transportation is just up the road and the city center is either a ten minute metro ride or a nice walk. The best part of the hostel is the staff, who are incredibly friendly, accommodating, and all too happy to give some recommendations on how to best enjoy the city.

Florence, Italy

Just a couple minutes away from il Duomo on foot and around the corner from the leather and food markets. Fantastic location, good facilities, adequate kitchen and pretty spacious rooms. The people that run it are also great - very helpful and friendly, perhaps the most exuberant welcoming I've received. I'd definitely recommend it, and would love to return on another tip to Florence.

Ostello S. Fosca

Venice, Italy

Honestly it's hard to find cheaper in a city like Venice. The hostel was difficult to find at first (as with anything in Venice) but the location really is fantastic for the train station and the attractions. The facilities were fair - the bathrooms were separate from bedrooms, but the rooms were all very spacious. The most annoying aspect was the strange hours for reception and the lock-out cleaning hours. A good hostel for its location but plan on spending your time in the city and eating out.

Good hostel for the value, location and facilities. The train station is incredibly close, as is the metro and tram. Plenty of common areas and a kitchen for guest use, free towels, clean facilities and well-sized rooms. The bar downstairs has well-priced drinks, live entertainment sometimes and is a great (and popular) place for meeting new people. Helpful and friendly staff. Tip: check out the bratwurst stand across the street for good and cheap food.

Cracow Hostel

Krakow, Poland

Definitely the perfect hostel for my stay in Krakow. Fantastical location in the center of the Old Town, breakfast is included, free wifi, facilities for personal cooking and plenty of common area for relaxing. Free lockers for every bed, plenty of bathrooms and showers, and very clean. It also had a very helpful and friendly staff and a great atmosphere. I would definitely stay here again and recommend it to anyone.

Ruta 80

Brno, Czech Republic

Ruta 80 would be a prefect destination for a party weekend away with a group of friends. Not a great stop if you're traveling alone in the off season. Good kitchen, nice facilities, free wifi, but more of a guest-house than a hostel since there isn't a 24-hour reception or anyone else but the guests. The rooms are a bit odd - no hallway so you walk through one dorm to get to another. It's also a little far from the main center, though is walk-able and plenty of transportation. Friendly owners.

Wombats City Hostel Budapest

Budapest, Hungary

I can't speak highly enough about this hostel. It had a fantastic location and plenty of resources about the surrounding area and the staff was very helpful. All of the facilities were immaculate - great kitchen, lots of common areas that were open at all hours, good bar (with good prices!) and the laundry was easy and reasonably priced. I had such a great time in Budapest and the hostel was a huge aspect of it - it's a great place for a solo traveler looking to socialize and have a good time.

St Christophers Prague

Prague, Czech Republic

St. Christopher's was a great hostel for the four nights I spent in Prague. Great value, very clean facilities, fantastic location and a very helpful staff. The dorms were a good size and the downstairs bar and restaurant was a fair value and good place to start the night. I'd also recommend taking advantage of the breakfast one day - especially if you partake in Prague's famous absinthe tradition.

Five Elements Hostel Frankfurt

Frankfurt, Germany

For the one night I spent in Frankfurt, FIve Elements Hostel was perfect. Incredibly close to the train station (along a strip in the Red Light District but safe) and within walking distance of the center of the city. It has comfortable beds, nice facilities, and a well-kept lounge area. It was Free Crepe Night, with sweet and cheesy crepes available to guests for free, and there's free coffee and tea available all day as well. Staff was accommodating and friendly.

Absolute Paris was not the most fantastic hostel I've ever stayed in, but it worked perfectly for my stay in Paris. It's extremely close to the metro, which makes any attraction in Paris reachable, and it's near several cafes and bars, food stalls and grocery stores. The room was small with four beds and had a small bathroom attached, but I didn't spend much time there. Free breakfast is a huge bonus and there is a kitchen to use for personal cooking. Small and modest operation, but great value.

MEININGER Amsterdam City West

Amsterdam, Netherlands

Granted it wasn't in the city center, but located right next to another train station about six minutes away. Excellent facilities, clean and spacious rooms and bathrooms, and fantastic areas for relaxing, cooking and eating. Definitely among the "luxury hostels" on the website, but a perfect value for a busy city. I'd recommend and will hopefully return.

Grand Hostel Berlin

Berlin, Germany

I stayed in Berlin for three nights and, since I unfortunately had the flu, spent most of my time in the hostel. The rooms are spacious and clean and the beds are comfortable. The staff is friendly and helpful and the facilities are good. The free wifi is strong, too. It's a bit far from the main attractions, but very close to the tram station and the more local downtown is nearby with plenty of restaurants and markets. The hostel's own restaurant is also good - I recommend the schnitzel.

Jaeger's Munich

Munich, Germany

Jaeger's was perfect for what we needed; close to the train station and the popular downtown area, inexpensive, and safe. Our dorm had 10 beds, though apparently there are rooms with 40. The free shot/drink was also a perk! And the staff was very helpful with local attractions (though seemed caught off-guard when I asked for recommendations). Not the most unique character and it's in a very commercial neighborhood, but was perfect for the one night we spent in Munich. I'd stay there again.

Great hostel for the price. It's within walking distance of the train station and most of the other attractions of the city, but far enough away so it's not too loud. The staff is fantastic - they let me drop off luggage at the early hour I arrived and had plenty of recommendations for the area. The bar downstairs is 24 hours and has great alcoholic shakes. The dorm was a bit much - mixed dorm with 15 beds stacked three high - and I didn't get much sleep. But then again it's London.

Lagan Backpackers

Belfast, Northern Ireland

I had an absolutely fantastic time at Lagan, and most of it was due to the fantastic staff. The folks in charge of reception and daily chores were friendly and able to relate to the budget and requests of a backpacker. And William, the owner, is exceptional. He's welcoming, encourages socialization among all the guests, and his traditional stew was delicious. Also a pretty convenient location, and the complimentary hot breakfast in the mornings was fantastic. Highly recommend!

Finn McCool's Giant's Causeway Hostel

Bushmills, Northern Ireland

I had a fantastic time at Finn McCool's. I ended up there on the recommendation of a fellow traveler and I'm glad I took her advice. Perfect location - 200 meters from the Giant's Causeway and a nice 2 mile walk to Bushmills town center. The man who runs the place is friendly and very helpful, knows how to give advice on a budget. The free breakfast was good, and at night he cooked a great dinner for cheap. Definitely recommend a night here.

Derry City Independent Hostel

Derry, Northern Ireland

Came here on the recommendation of a fellow traveler and I'm so glad I did! Great location - extremely close to the city center but far enough away to be quiet at night. The facilities were great - complete kitchen, hot shower, tv room and cozy lounge downstairs. And the owner, Kylie, was such a friendly and gracious host, full of recommendations and a blast to go out with. I highly recommend Derry Independent.

Derry City Independent Hostel

Derry, Northern Ireland

I stayed at the Derry Independent Hostel for two nights in October, and couldn't have been happier with my stay. The hostel is a bit outside the main area but extremely close to almost all attractions. It has a fantastic character - feels more like a home than a hostel, and has great facilities - nice bathrooms and showers, good kitchen and free breakfast. The best part of the hostel is the owners, who are friendly, well-traveled, helpful and honestly want all guests to have a great time.

Great location to the coastal walks of the area and easy access to the adorable downtown district. The kitchen was impressive (and huge) and the dorms were also quite spacious. During the summer season it must be quite the place to be, but in November it was very quiet. Still made for a nice overnight, though.

Galway, Ireland

I had an absolutely great time while staying at Sleepzone - twice! The first three days, over the weekend, I found the hostel a very safe environment, removed enough from the city center so that it was still quiet but so easy to walk a few blocks to the pub central. Very clean, great facilities in the kitchen. The best part was the staff - fantastic recommendations. When I came back to the city a day early due to traveling mishaps they were quick to help. Highly recommend!

Rainbow Hostel Doolin

Doolin, Ireland

Mattie made our night at the hostel memorable. It's the off season so there were only four of us in the entire place, but he entertained us like a champ. We were treated to homemade scones with jam an butter, coffee and tea, and a slideshow presentation of the local archaeological history. Just a short walk from the main street and the Cliffs of Moher are easily accessible by walking or car. I had a great time in Doolin - and a huge part of that was the Rainbow Hostel. Go there!

Bru Bar & Hostel

Cork, Ireland

I think that Bru Bar provided a great location to explore Cork and felt very welcoming and comfortable. I loved that there was a bar on the premises that had live music every night, so if you were tired or jet-lagged it was possible to have a night in but not miss out - and it was good music too! Admittedly the free breakfast in the morning was a little disappointing and disorganized, but it''s hard to complain about a free meal. The staff was excellent and very eager to offer recommendations.

Abrahams Hostel

Dublin, Ireland

Had a great time at Abraham House - very friendly staff and cleaner than expected facilities. Huge plus that there was wifi and free breakfast, and great location close to the city centre but still in a semi-quiet area (surrounded by other hostels). Was also happy to find that other guests were friendly and talkative. Great experience.
