Sopha House

Luang Prabang, Laos

Enjoyed 4 nights here. Best location in LP in our opinion. Very characterful house on the quieter river near the main sights. Friendly staff and good value for money for LP. No communal room but can sit outside the rooms.

Catba Hostel

Cat Ba Island, Vietnam

A very good value family run guest house just up the hill from the sea front. Attentive staff who are very helpful.

Giggling Tree

Yangshuo, China

Great guest house a little way from the hectic centre of town. Wonderful location, awesome views, great pool which was newly opened. Big spacious room which was great but the shower had poor drainage which was the only thing to let the room down. Helpful and attentive staff. Really recommend it as base to explore the region.

Generally good hostel. On a quiet road, away from the centre but near 2 metro stops. However some of the rooms overlook a running track where you will get woken up at 07:30 every weekday with hundreds of locals doing there morning exercises. Food good, pool table, lovely pond and decking area. Staff not as friendly as other hostels we have stayed in China.

Great hostel. Modern, friendly, relaxing. Organised panda trip from here which was great. Food OK but not great. Can do your own laundry or have it sent out. Recommended.

Superb location close to south gate. Double room disappointing, small and noisy some nights from the bar which runs beneath the hostel. Food very good especially the pizza which you can even have a 20 inch. Hostel quite expensive for standard compared to elsewhere. Have to pay to use computers but WiFi is free.

Wonderful atmospheric building and courtyards. Massive bed. Double room very nice. However it seemed a slightly odd place. Got picked up at the station at 5 in the morning but then taken to hostel where the driver rang someone else and I had to explain we had a reservation (uh you just picked us up from the station?). Staff were most unfriendly we encountered in China. Good place to stay but maybe eat and go out elsewhere.

Peking Yard Hostel

Beijing, China

Great location and very good staff. Arrived early after hard seat train hell (no sleep). Room not ready, OK, it still wasn't ready after it should have been so ended up snoozing on the sofa. Very upsetting... Was very cold in the communal areas and rooms, could do with a bit more heating. Even in the rooms we struggled to be warm on some nights. Food good but pricey same with acomodation but then I guess this is Beijing. Despite all this had a good time and would recommend.

Sunpath Mongolia

Ulaanbaatar, Mongolia

This a lovely littleĀ  family run hostel and it's very cheap and in a good location about 20mins walk from the centre. It was so helpful to be collected from the train station at 6am in the morning. We took a tour out to the countryside and stayed in a Ger, arranged by the family. The tour is a must do and was helpful to have a guide and driver. Breakfast of toast and tea/coffee is included which is great. They have been extremely flexible with us Coming and going and storing our big luggage.

Galina's Hostel

Irkutsk, Russia

We stayed in Galina's for 2 nights. It was more like a home stay rather than a hostel and we did not feel at liberty to cook. She supplied us with pancake breakfast daily and would prepare you an evening meal if you wanted. Galina spoke a little English and was always trying to communicate with us but I think she speaks better German.

Soul Kitchen

St Petersburg, Russia

We stayed in an awesome double room in the Hostel. It was more like a boutique hotel. The staff were great, very helpful, they even translated a Russian menu so we knew what we were ordering. They provided us with waffles every morning which were delicious. My only criticism was that the sign was very small and it took us a while to find the entrance but this seems typical of Russia. Overall one of the best hostels we have ever stayed at which has set the bar very high.
