Miraflores House

Lima, Peru

Francis is a great host, as lots of other reviews have said, he really takes the time to tell you about the city and make you aware of where you should and shouldn't go! The hostel is in a good location, there's a good supermarket just up the road if you want to self cater and plenty of places to eat nearby if you don't. The facilities are really good, good hot showers, purified water, musical instruments and loads of dvds! I highly recommend staying here!

El Hostal

Antigua, Guatemala

Great location, just across the road from Cafe No Se and a couple of blocks from the Grand Plaza. Beauiful central square with a fountain, the rooms are full of character and there are hot showers! Massive lockers under the beds in the dorms mean you don't have to worry about your stuff and the breakfast is ace! The staff are really helpful, and can book airport shuttles, buses to other parts of Guatemala and get your laundry done for you too! A great place to stay!

Had a good stay here, Mike at reception and a couple of other guys who's names we didn't catch were really nice and helpful and full of info about the city. The private rooms are really nice, with a little kitchenette if you want to self-cater, although the bathroom sink and bath couple probably do with replacing. All in all a good place to stay!

We stayed in a private room, with an en-suite, which was nice and clean. The staff were helpful and friendly, with good advice about what to see and where to go in SLC. However, the hostel is not a backpackers hostel in the sense that you might think. Lots of long-staying residents of SLC live there, so it doesn't feel that comfortable for backpackers sometimes. The kitchen is small and could use a few more saucepans and utensils, but the laundry facilities are really good and cheap.

Bamboo Beach

Nadi, Fiji

A comfortable, cheap hostel. We stayed in a private room with a lock on the door and a locker inside, although the people we met who stayed in the dorms said they didn't have either. The nightly kava parties are good fun if you like to sing and play guitar all night, slightly less so if you actually like sleeping at night! The travel desk isn't that good if you want to book day trips, but is ok for multi-day stuff. Laundry, cafe etc is availible down the beach from Smugglers Cove.

This hostel is about 10 to 15 minutes walk from the main streets of Cairns, which is good because it means it's pretty quiet. It's right on the water front, so it's a really nice walk into town though. Inside the hostel is OK, but the communal seating and eating area is pretty small and you're allowed to smoke everywhere, which isn't great for non-smokers. Top tip, head towards the lagoon in the centre of town for free wi-fi!

Dingo Moon Lodge

Darwin, Australia

A nice enough stay, but there are no lockers in the dorms, so security could be improved. It's close enough to the bars and pubs if that's what you like, but far enough away that you're not disturbed too much. That said, Darwin is a party town for backpackers so you will be woken by a drunk dorm mate at some point most nights... Only other negative is that the toilets back onto the dining area, so you can hear everyone having their morning constitutional while eating your breakfast. Not nice!

Beaches of Broome

Broome, Australia

Nice hostel, a stone's throw from Cable Beach and it's beautiful sunsets, but it's quite a hike into town and the buses are pretty pricey (the bus stop is nearby, just up the road). The communal areas of the hostel are clean and tidy but we were in a dorm with long-stay residents and it was a tip and the door was always left open and unlocked. The staff, on the other hand, are awesome and are really nice and helpful. Free breakfast is good with toast, cereal and fruit every day.

Sunshine Bedz KL

Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia

Not a bad place to stay if you're only there for a couple of days. The location is great for shopping, eating and getting around town but it's really, really noisy at night time! There's loads of space inside the hostel, big common areas, but it's not well used. There are only a few tables and stools, whereas it could really use some sofas and comfy chairs. Securitry's OK, it's on the second floor off the street and has an intercom system to get in, but bring your own padlock for the lockers!

YHA Bangkok Airport

Bangkok, Thailand

A fantastic location for the airport. It's literally only a 5 minute trip by taxi. The staff were very helpful in booking taxis to the airport and there was someone on reception to see us off at 4am. It was very quiet when we were there, hence the low atmosphere score, but it was clean and comfortable for our stay.

2W Cafe & Bed

Phuket, Thailand

2W is a really nice little hostel with really friendly staff. The room didn't feel that secure, with a balcony that could be climbed into from either of the next-door houses, and no safe in the room. But we stayed for a few days with no problems, so its probably secure enough! It's a convenient location with plenty of shops nearby and close to the local bus-stop. Taxis around Phuket are really expensive, so get the buses if you don't ride a scooter, it'll save you a fortune

Happy Dragon Hostel

Beijing, China

We loved staying at the Happy Dragon, it was really comfortable, clean and very welcoming! The bar serves good food all day, although the music can get a bit loud in there. The hostel organises trips to different things, we went to see a Chinese Opera show and an acrobatics show, both were brilliant. However, if you do go to the shows, bring a map with you because the transport there is included, but the transport back isn't. On the whole, a great hostel to use to explore Beijing!
