Maleku Hostel

Alajuela, Costa Rica

Fab hostel very close to airport but still walking distance to centre of town. No where in Alajuela is particularly cheap, but this place is the best value for a double private. They offer free shuttle to the airport which we used and was on time and efficient. The staff are very friendly and happy to answer any questions you have. The hot water showers were great, and the small breakfast was plenty for us. Would stay again.

Our room joined onto a communual area so was a little noisy at night although silent by 11ish. The room had no protection from noise, people showering or talking their voices carried. There was also a young child that was up and about every morning at 6am shouting, screaming and running around. Would stay again as staff were very good, computers and wifi were good, kitchen was good, safe location of SJ. Hopefully the child and parents would of moved on but would bring ear plugs just in case.

Lily is the nicest hostel owner, she really helps everyone achieve whatever they want to do in Monteverde. The hostel is very comfortable with great views, spotlessly clean with a well stocked kitchen. Lily and her staff are always busy cleaning and maintaining the hostel and the fridge is the cleanest we have seen in seven months of travelling. The breakfast is self service from 6am to 9am with coffee available throughout the day. We would definately stay here again.

Great staff with a very efficient laundry service. Nice hostel, peaceful and central. Lots of mosquitos when we were there (not in bedrooms thankfully) due to weather conditions, take spray and provisions as necessary.

Karina and her Mum were wonderful hostesses providing very good breakfasts and company. We weren't given a key to our room, but as within the family home it wasn't a problem. Beds were clean and comfortable, room and bathroom needed a better clean. Location was convenient, but there weren't any maps available, Karina explained amenities and directions for us, this might not be enough if it is your first time in Lima. Would stay again.

Started well but ended badly Returning from Colca Canyon tour there was no hot water for 3 days and mother gave us excuse after excuse (too many people in hostel, guests doing laundry in rooms, weather too cold etc). She told us that Jose had visited and found no problem, he hadn't. When she finally contacted Jose (he was taking time off) he confirmed the gas was empty. Very poor comunication between staff and no forward planning from Jose. Check things twice have a plan should problems arise!

We had to change our booking at the last minute and there were no additional charges incurred, Marcos was very understanding. When we did arrive our flight was delayed, but Marcos was there as promised waiting to pick us up. The hostel is lovely, spotlessly clean with big rooms. There is a lovely outside bar and garden area and even a resident chef. The breakfast provided is also very good. Would stay again.

We came to stay here again after visiting Machu Pichu as it is so nice and Raquel is so lovely. She looked after our big bags at no extra cost whilst we were gone. I was very unwell also and she showed great concern and compassion bringing me and my husband soup and checking I was o.k. Raquel will go out of her way to make sure you have everything you need for your stay and is full of great local information for Cusco and the surrounding area. I Highly recomend this hotel.

First room had a broken toilet, we were moved straight away to a superior room. Breakfast was advertised as starting at 4.30am but it was not available, we had to search the kitchen for food and no staff turned up till 4.55am, there was no hot water for a cup of tea, staff didnt really care. On leaving the hostel for M.P. we found a member of staff asleep in reception on a sofa having soiled himself and the floor. When we returned at mid day he was still there and the floor had not been clean

Amazing tour of the salt flats, I would definatley recommend that you book with this family run business. David and Irma were excellent as our driver and cook, can`t thank them enough. The hostel is clean and good value, it is a little cold but the showers are hot and powerful and the covers on the beds are cozy warm so it is fine. There isn`t really any common area which doesn`t matter if you aren`t staying long. The wifi is fine but there aren`t any guest computers.

We booked to stay for four nights but stayed seven. Curly organised a pizza party for our final night to say goodbye as we were part of the family and would be missed. From the messages on the walls this appears to be a hostel that someone once loved, this is sadly not how it is now. The staff are indifferent to any problems and generally lax, often leaving the building unattended which is a problem as you rely on them for entry to the building. One morning there wasn't enough breakfast for the amount of guests and the staff on duty simply stated that she didn't think there was enough when she put it out but it wasn't her problem! 2 members of staff did care

This could be an excellent hostel with just a little bit of tlc and a thorough clean. I don't want to put any one off staying here as it is an excellent location and the staff are friendly. It would be great if they just fixed the little things like the leaking hot tap and non working cold tap in the bathroom and sorted out the temperature fluctuations in the shower.

Excellent breakfast and the free glass of wine in the evening was a nice touch. The empanada lesson was a blast with good level of competition between guests. Pizza night was good with an almost endless supply of fresh pizza cooked at the hostel (not enough numbers to be held at usual location) with free wine. Walking distance to bus terminal which is always a bonus. Free use of a washing machine was amazing (some guests moaned that it was always in use? Err its free!) Big thanks to all staff.

A very helpful and welcoming family run this clean hostel with excellent facilities. The location couldn´t be better, right at the top of parque urquiza a 5 minute walk from the river. They helped us book a days fishing with a local guide which was excellent, and the father even drove us to the meeting point and then picked us up afterwards. They really couldn´t have been nicer. A lovely breakfast too, with coffe and tea available all day in the well stocked kitchen. Comfortable beds too.
