The guy in charge was friendly, on top of things, helpful! For whatever reason, people staying at this hostel weren't very affable, whenever I was in the kitchen area, everyone just watching tv... Beds were comfortable, glad they provided lockers. Not a fan of the bathrooms, the combined sink/toilet/shower just doesn't work in a shared-user setup, like it does in Nordic hotel rooms. After a while the shower curtain gets gross and it's just unappealing. (I stayed at places like YHA, no issues)

Thank you for your comment. For the bathroom: you are talking about the disable one, therefore it is a normal set up to have all in one room.

Like almost everyone who came to this YHA, I was there to do the Tongariro Alpine Crossing (AKA hike up to Mount Doom and destroy the great Ring). Good location, with very close walks to a full-service convenience store - to stock up food and supplies - and to a pub - to celebrate finishing the hike. The guy working at the front (can't remember name, but tall fellow) was friendly and knowledgeable about the Crossing. Kitchen was always buzzing with people, good place to chat with fellow hikers.

Very clean bathrooms (individual use, not locker-room/shared style), extensive kitchen facility, quiet neighborhood. Kate (front desk) was very thoughtful, preparing the keys and communicating the door code by email in case I arrived after she left. A word about the location - it is accessible by both the numbered buses in Auckland as well as the Outer LINK bus system - just be prepared to walk 5-10 min from the bus drop-off point to get to the hostel.
