Oaklands Lodge

Stayed there for a few nights and had a very pleasant time. The hostel is not in the center of Auckland, however there are nice little shops, delis and restaurants nearby. There is also a convinient connection to the city center and the airport. Staff is friendly and helpful and was also able to provide us with good advice for our trip. They also have a big pinboard with information about car rentals, so I suppose they can help you to rent or buy a car for a roadtrip.

Fat Cat Travellers Community

If you want a hostel - don't go here: You can't lock any doors but the toilet (and you have only one normal toilet in the hostel), mould grows not only in the bathroom (also only one), walls and doors are thin and other customers loud, beds have bedbugs (a lot), not to mention the mouldy food in the (very small) kitchen. Staff are woofers only. Location is far off from public transport and the city center. Looking for a hippie-community? You're right here. Otherwise: Stay off.
