Gongkaew Chiangmai Home

Chiang Mai, Thailand

I had a great time at Gongkaew Guest House. Set in a quiet neighborhood of the Old City, it had clean rooms, free computers, and free coffee and sandwiches all day. Their staff is also very friendly and helpful. The whole complex is arranged around a private garden, giving the experience a laid back, homey vibe. The one downside is that the many ponds that dot the yard were absolute breeding grounds for mosquitoes, who swarmed the common areas after even a bit of rain.

Sihome Backpackers Hostel

Vientiane, Laos

Great staff and a very social atmosphere make this hostel on a quiet street a great choice to spend a few days. Movie room and pool table were great, as well as complimentary breakfast that was the best I've had at any hostel.

BackHome Kuala Lumpur

Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia

Friendly staff and welcoming atmosphere in a convenient location. Showers are in the bathroom, which getting clean makes a bit more complicated. The rest of the facilities are very nice, including the roof deck with great computers, kitchen, and movie setup.

My single room with private bathroom and air con was clean and fine for one night. However, I can't for the life of me understand why they put uncloseable open vents on the door and windows leading out into the hallway. Every hallway noise, including loud neighbors, TV noise, and a cranky rooster across the street, echoed right into my room. I was lucky to have ear plugs, because otherwise I would have gotten no sleep. Staff was sort of helpful but mostly indifferent and/or asleep.

The Island Hotel Bali

Kuta, Indonesia

While a bit on the pricey side for a dorm bed, the clean white walls, flowing curtains, tile floors, and central pool make the Island feel more like a relaxing spa than a hostel. Social atmosphere, great free breakfast, and helpful staff. Only downside is that it is a bit of a walk from the main action on the beaches.
