Woodstock Hostel

Paris, France

The main selling point for this hostel is its location right in the heart of Montmartre and only a short way from Gard du Nord and Sacre Coeur. The room was a little small but not too bad, and there were plenty of power points around the room. The only slight problem with the room was the safes on the wall above each bed, which seem like a great idea until you smack your elbow off them for the third time! The breakfast wasn’t huge, but it’s included so I’m not going to complain too much.

Snuffel Backpacker Hostel

Bruges, Belgium

Snuffel was a great place to stay, though as the other reviews say it is a little strange that you have to cross the bar to get to the showers! The room was fine, the included breakfast was good, the staff were great, and the bar was excellent so no complaints! The hostel is also within easy walking distance of the city centre, and there is a free walking tour that departs from the reception every day. We really enjoyed our stay here and would recommend it.

Fairly easy to find, the main problem with this hostel was the size of the room. We were in a 4 bed room which would have been small for 2. There were no lockers or space to put any bags out of the way at all really, though the room was clean, the beds were comfortable, and the shower was hot. So not too bad for a short stay but it would have felt cramped had we been there for longer. Also there weren’t really enough accessible power points in the room for four people.

At first we thought that this hostel was a bit far out of the main city centre, but actually being in Kreuzberg was useful as there are cheap restaurants and a supermarket really close by. It’s also within walking distance of the East Side Gallery, which is definitely worth walking along. The beds and sheets weren’t all that clean however, especially given that they charge you for sheets that it’s compulsory to use. There was also only one bathroom for all the dorms and it was a bit grubby.

Great hostel, within walking distance of Wenceslas square/the old city, with great facilities. There were 18 beds in our dorm but it didn’t feel cramped and there were plenty of clean and high quality bathrooms/showers so there was never a queue. The beds were good, each person had a large locker under their bed (bring your own padlock) and each bed has its own shelf, reading light and power point. The hostel maps are excellent, recommending the best places to eat, drink, sightsee etc.

A&T Holiday Hostel Wien

Vienna, Austria

A little far out of the city centre, but easy to get to using the metro and otherwise very good. The Wifi was somewhat unreliable, but the room was large, clean and comfortable, the bathroom was clean and the shower was hot. The only problem was that there was no air conditioning in the room and no ventilation in the bathroom, so the room got really hot during the night! The bar was a bit small and stuffy but there were lots of people around enjoying the €1 wine or tequila during the happy hour.

Confidenti Hostel

This hostel was within easy walking distance of the centre of town, and had all of the features you’d expect from a good hostel (except a bar). Beds were clean (though not all that comfortable), each person was given their own key and large locker, there was a large kitchen, and Barbara on the reception was really friendly and helpful. Having said that, there were very few showers and bathrooms, and one of the showers was stone cold. Overall though this hostel was good and in a good location.

Venice Hotel Villa Dori

Venice, Italy

The busses are irregular and hard to find, and the hotel’s pickup is extremely expensive. My main issue is that the info on their page says ‘taxes and service included’, but we were still charged the city tax per night on top of our room. They claimed that the included taxes are ‘hostelworld taxes’, which I haven’t come across anywhere else so either including them is just standard or they are lying. Also the Wifi isn’t free and you have to pay if you want a map of Venice from reception. Poor.

Riverbank's Hostel

Florence, Italy
83%

Location was fantastic (within easy walking distance of the major sights in the old town), the owner was helpful and friendly, beds were comfy and the shower was hot, so overall this hostel was great. Actually it’s more of a budget hotel than a hostel, so I wouldn’t recommend it if you’re looking for a place to meet other travellers (there’s no bar) but for what we wanted it was great. The only problem was that the sink in our bathroom was very slow to drain, but everything else was fine.

Flower Hostel Milan

This hostel was fine, especially considering how cheap it was. The beds were clean and fairly comfortable, reception staff were helpful, directions to the hostel were clear. It was a little far out of the city centre, but the bus out to the hostel was regular so it wasn’t too bad. Overall pretty good, the only complaints would be that the showers weren’t always hot and there was an exposed live wire in one of the bathrooms that I shocked myself on by accident – other than that it was fine.

Open House

When we arrived the only person around didn't seem to know what was going on at all, later on the owner arrived and led us into someone else's room (without them there) to wait while she figured out what to do with us despite the fact we'd booked weeks before. She then told us we were going to be staying in a different hostel even further out of Paris, requiring a bus and a metro to get to the centre! Even then the room was tiny and two of the six beds were ridiculously uncomfortable.
