If you do not want the hassle of finding your way to a hotel downtown in the middle of the night like arriving at 11pm with kids (as we did) , this is a good stop. I had a handicap room with 2 toilets (great) but I also had an unmade bed with a beer can filled with not beer, sitting in the corner top bunk. If you expect nothing its fine.
Copenhagen is a very expensive city. Checking in to a hostel that requires me to rent the sheets & towel and do up my own beddings and undoing everything is just not part of my adventure anymore BUT its no big deal and I'll smile at the reminder of backpacking. Most staff were almost serious and bordering unfriendly but I like to think its part of the poor traveler in them or a cultural coolness and I was traveling with 2 well traveled kids - 8 and 11
If you are looking for the Meininger for the first time it might be a little scary to think that you have just booked a hostel in the middle of nowhere. But actually its a one stop station (Sloterdijk) from Amsterdam and an excellent bus ride to Vogel Park vicinity. Its got a free and easy attitude from cooking your own meals to doing your laundry (queue basis); totally civilized and a melting pot for meeting other travelers. My kids were 8 and 11 and they enjoyed Meininger West
