Baan Nampetch Hostel

A great place to spend our last night in Thailand: close to Khao San, but quiet inside. The communal showers are large and clean. The terrace is a great place to relax. The front office closes earlier than most hostels, but the staff are friendly when around.

Suneta Hostel Khaosan

Centrally located near Khao San Road, and within walking distance to the Grand Palace. As expected, you can hear noise from the street all night long. The hostel was a little pricey, but the common area and private room were tastefully designed, and the communal bathroom was well maintained and clean.

Green Tulip House

Chiang Mai, Thailand

Though the rooms and atmosphere were fantastic, the best part of Green Tulip House was the staff. Stella was incredibly helpful in ensuring we enjoyed our stay. She booked our tours and directed us to nearby places to eat. The location is not too far from the airport, but we did not find much to do within walking distance. We didn't want to leave!

Southern Fried Rice

Don't let the name deter you. Southern Fried Rice is a restaurant with spacious guest rooms upstairs. Their food is delicious and vegetarian friendly. The staff were friendly and helpful; the owner, Terje, assisted us in finding places nearby and booking our tours. We had an early morning tour, and the staff pre-made food for us so we wouldn't miss breakfast. The location was perfect for us -- tucked quietly behind the main road, but walking distance to Kata and Karen Beaches.

Difficult to find, but in a great location and close to several fantastic places to eat. We stayed in the private room; however, sound carried easily from room to room.

Friendly staff, hotel quality rooms, great breakfast. Not much to do in the immediate vicinity, but a 5-10 minute walk to the monorail and Puduraya bus station.

Camino Verde Hostel and B&B

Monteverde, Costa Rica

Camino Verde is welcoming, clean, and hosted by a wonderfully friendly crew. The breakfast is great, the coffee is always fresh, and the beer is cheap. Most of all, Jose helped us maximize our time in Monteverde: we booked everything through him, then he completely managed the rides and admissions.

Arenal Backpackers Resort

Don't be deterred by the tent option; we had a great time in one. They stay dry and cool overnight, locked during the day (you can borrow a padlock), and have power. The place had a very youthful feel with themed parties every night, which can get loud and last well into the night.

The bar, the kitchen, and the staff were excellent. The rooms feel like mini apartments. The free (vegetarian friendly) dinners were a great bonus.

We had a fantastic time in Berlin, mostly due to the awesome people we met at our hostel. It was great to hang out there.
