So this backpackers is kind of split into two parts. One is the backpackers area, and there is also a motel. In general, we had a nice stay - We stayed in the motel bit, it was a little bit "family vacation". The staff were very welcoming and helpful (and even upgraded our room). The kitchens were the big let down, out of 12 electric hotplates, only 1 really worked, and also non-intuitive, non-functioning gas hotplates. There was also a cat that kind of lived in the kitchen. Very unhygienic.
Lovely little hostel just outside of Hokkitika (near the glow worms). Kitchen was excellent, staff were helpful. BEWARE: This hostel is on the main road. If you are a light sleeper, you might struggle. We had earplugs and this helped a lot.
Awesome hostel, very clean. Kitchen was only 'adequate', would love if the knives were a bit sharper and the stoves heated up a bit faster. Staff offer great services like picking travellers up from the ferry. Awesome cats, nice heaters. Good common areas. Also, we were there during an earthquake and felt very very safe.
By far the best, most welcoming hostel we stayed at in New Zealand. It was quite small, and during the quiet season, but even so, the hostel's nature still attracted a group of interesting and like minded travellers that it was fun to share a hostel with.
Excellent accommodation with a great theme. Warm comfortable rooms and nice staff. The only negative thing we have to say is that the main hall (and thus rooms) were very echo-y. On the second night we were there there was a group singing in the common area (outside of the quiet area). We could hear this very clearly from inside our room - At 2 am this was not ideal.
