Sunflower Place Silom

Bangkok, Thailand

Good value for Bangkok. It feels like a hostel, but a very nice and clean one. The rooms were spacious, there was hot water, wifi was strong in the room, and there was free instant tea and coffee in the lobby. We really liked the location - next to the night market and near a lot of food stalls. The front desk staff did not speak very good English and there was no common area, but other than that we were really pleased and will be going back when we leave Thailand.

Waterland Hotel

Hue, Vietnam

The hotel is deceiving from the outside. It's in an alley and there's not much to the front, but the rooms were very spacious and super clean. The breakfast was the typical breakfast we've had in Vietnam - baguette and eggs cooked to order. It was good. They kept giving us free tea any time we were sitting in the lobby which was nice too.

Little Hanoi Hostel

Hanoi, Vietnam

The rooms were clean, albeit a bit a small. There was free tea, coffee, and fresh pineapple and watermelon all day in the lobby. The staff was unbelievably helpful and sweet - they insisted on learning everyone's names and greeted you by name when you walked in. They even brought a cake to my room when they learned it was my birthday! We booked our Halong Bay cruise through them (Fantasea Charters - budget option) and were really pleased. Just get a room in the back to avoid the street noise.

Eco Wave Lodge

Cape Town, South Africa

We spent a week here. The kitchen was fantastic and spacious. The rooms are small, but the common areas are so comfortable that you don't really end up spending much time in the room at all. The neighborhood is really cute too - you're just two blocks from the beach and a 2-3 little restaurants. You're a 45 minute drive from downtown Capetown and there is no public transportation so I wouldn't stay here if you don't have a rental car, but if you want some relaxation this place is perfect.

Tangier Melting Pot Hostel

Tangier, Morocco

The rooms were simple and the shared bathroom was clean. The location was great and the staff was really helpful. The rooftop was a really nice place to hang out and meet other travelers. I do want to point out that there were definitely bed bugs in our room. The staff was really open with us and explained that they had already fumigated twice and were scheduled for another one that week. I think they'll sort it out, but just be careful.

Residence Rooms

Sarajevo, Bosnia And Herzegovina

This place is pretty good, but not great. It's an old, two-story apartment that has been converted into a hostel. The room we had was spacious, but the bed and furniture were pretty old. The location is good in the sense that it's right in the middle of everything, but it also means that it's incredibly loud at night. We were there on a weekend and had to sleep with ear plugs because the bar across the street was going until early morning. Owner and staff were wonderful and super informative

SR Backpackers

Saranda, Albania

Great if you're backpacking in Albania. The owner is *so* helpful - he would literally walk us somewhere when we asked him for directions. He never tried to sell you tours - he just explained the best way to do things, even if it meant taking the local bus. The place itself is basic, but we weren't expecting much in Albania anyway. There is no aircon and just one bathroom for everyone, but they make it work.

Metropolis Hostel

Istanbul, Turkey

Location, location, location. It's perfect and the staff is so helpful. We booked our sailing trip through them and were really happy. Stay here!
