The neighbourhood surrounding Palmer House Swiss Cottage is stunning, especially toward Hempstead, a few stops north on the number 46 bus - or just a quick 12 minute walk up Fitzjohn's Avenue from the hostel to Hempstead village. At Jack Straw's Castle, only a further 6 minute hike up Heath Street from the Hempstead Tesco is a fantastic wealth of inviting rustic park benches - so underutilized. Right there is also a tremendously useful entry point to all the cavernous rigors of Hempstead Heath.

RK/Buckner hostel, San Diego, USA
9.4
23rd Oct 2014

Buckner Hostel is truly up to the task. It has a refreshingly guest oriented approach to everyone, has terrific cable TV in every room, even the 4 bed units, and is but a block away from a gigantic Grocery Outlet supermarket and is a San Diego minute from a toasty Starbucks. US passports are welcome.

Pitlochry Backpackers, Pitlochry, Scotland
9.4
13th Sep 2013

At 2,760 feet atop Ben y Vracke, only 3 miles north of Pitlochry Backpackers, plus a quick 2,600-foot altitude change, is a detailed metal sign with a 360-degree map at the summit pointing to 2 dozen surrounding peaks at an astounding eagle-eye view of Cairngorm National Park to the north, Balmoral to the east, and the lochs leading to Rannock Moor and the Highlands to the west. Also, the truly complex Killiecrankie Trail, next day, leads flawlessly from the Fish Bridge for hours of wilderness.

So convenient, right next door to the Inverness Bus Depot - also, right next door to the most useful Inverness Public Library with its 3 internet terminals - both are less than a minute away.

Glasgow Youth Hostel, Glasgow, Scotland
9.7
10th Sep 2013

Studiousness pervades this long-esteemed Glasgow Youth Hostel's spacious reading lounge with its inexhaustive supply of cushy chairs and serious readers - reason enough to ponder actually spending an entire winter in Scotland, mostly tucked away right here in this more than comfortable roost, just a few serious-looking pubs away from the University of Glasgow.
