Dougies Backpackers Resort

Port Douglas, Australia

Atmosphere is great, but the ace is pretty filthy. Add to that (I think because of the tent area), security is not safe. Stayed 2days. Went shopping 2 days. Both days 1/2 my food was stolen. This is the only hostel which I've had this problem in 40 days. Add to that, the tent travelers were sitting on my door step to avoid the rain until 1:00-2:00 both nights, it was loud and hard to sleep. Vibe great, but not good enough to stay again.

Space Hotel

Melbourne, Australia

It's a hotel with dorms. Definitely does not have a hostel vibe. Hostel was clean, secure and nice. Staff were nothing spectacular. The Asian girl at the front desk needs to smile or develop a personality. She's the first person people see, so she's essentially the face of the hostel. She had a lousy attitude. In spite of her, I really liked the hotel. Wifi is pricey at $10 per day. Go to the library a 1/2 block down for free wifi.

The Old Countryhouse

Christchurch, New Zealand

I booked a private, so can't speak of the dorms. Room was great and bed was super comfy. Staff were great too and the girl was cute as a button. Location was a bit far from the city centre (15-20 min walk) but not much happening in Christchurch now. Atmosphere wasn't great, but I think it was more the people in my building than anything else... pretty much all Germans who didn't seem to want to socialize with anyone else. Internet reception in my room was pretty much non existent.

Happy Apple Backpackers

Abel Tasman National Park, New Zealand

Staa wre very friendly. Location was good if you're content being about a 20 minute drive from Abel Tasman. The hostel was very clean. I booked a private though, so cannot comment on the dorms. The worst part of this hostel was the Internet. It was very pricy ($2 for 30 minutes) ad the access to the wifi was extremely limited. You could only get a connection in the kitchen or outside in the patio area. Horribly inconvenient. Also, hot showers time out after 5 minutes. Overall, a decent hostel.

Adventure Queenstown Hostel

Queenstown, New Zealand

What a great hostel! It's a hostel that really focuses on the little things that are important to a traveller. Common areas were awesome. Staff were even better. Some of the nicest and helpful people I met on the trip. Location was dead center to everything in town. Definitely felt like it was more of a party style hostel, but Queenstown is the most lively of all NZ. I 'm not much of a partier anymore and I never felt it got too noisy or out of hand though. Would definitely stay again.

Thanks for your kind words! We're pleased to hear that you never felt the noise never got out of hand! We work hard at this and our aim is to NOT be a party hostel in what is a very big party town! A tricky endeavour but we're proud of achieving a balance between a good time and a quiet time. Our core market is the slightly older than average backpacker, so this atmosphere seems to suit us. Best of luck in your travels!

Taupo Urban Retreat

Taupo, New Zealand

Loved this place!! The staff are what really made it special. I was there for only one night and got a lucky free upgrade to an ensuite private which made it even better. Location is central and only about 3 blocks to the lake. Very convenient to grocery store, shops. Kitchen was good size, but could use some more eating utensils. Two times, all the spoons were gone. Minor complaint. Other than that, great friendly environment and wish I had more time to stay!

Thanks for your great comments, so thrilled you enjoyed your stay with us and the great things Taupo has to offer - you will have to come visit again! Disappearing cutlery is a big problem (I suspect that somewhere a little of NZ is sinking with all the cutlery that leaves our hostel alone!!) we will make sure our supplies are replenished more often! Enjoy the rest of your travels :-)

Kiwipaka Waitomo

Waitomo, New Zealand

I did not like this hostel. The hostel is more of a motel style than a hostel. The Internet was not working, nor was the TV. The atmosphere just wasn't a typical hostel-like social atmosphere. The kitchen was ok, but you had to go to the reception and put a deposit down for plates and utensils. Same for towels. Just not convenient at all. The rooms weren't bad. I got a two person room and nobody rented the other bed, so it was nice. I would not stay here again.

Blarneys Rock Backpackers

Rotorua, New Zealand

I really liked the vibe of this place. The common area was right in the middle of all the rooms, so lots of people hanging out together. Not the cleanest of hostels, but not bad. Location was central. Staff very friendly. I would stay there again. I booked a private and the bed was comfy. I can't comment on the dorms. I could see it getting very loud though since the rooms are so close to the common areas. No problems for me though.

On the Beach Backpackers

Whitianga, New Zealand

Pretty nice hostel. I legally liked the setup. Had a bit of an apartment style feel to it. There were two rooms in the 'apartment'... one private and one 4 bed dorm. the two rooms shared a TV room, kitchen and a bathroom, so no real concerns of too many people trying to access at the same time. I booked a 4 bed dorm. Beds were good. Staff was great. I would definitely stay there again. No Internet available in the rooms though.... had to go to reception area to access wifi.

Bamber House

Auckland, New Zealand

My first hostel. Such a great experience. I booked a two person with ensuite bath. Very nice. Very clean. Beds were comfy. Roommate was hot. Vibe was fantastic. Everyone was friendly. Two blocks to Mt Eden which was very convenient. Staff was helpful. Would definitely stay there again.
