Suneta Hostel Khaosan

Bangkok, Thailand

When I was back in Bangkok I went straight to back to Suneta for my second stay. Suneta is one of the best hostels I have stayed in, after over a year on the road. The facility, location, security, and cleanliness and exemplary. Excellent wifi from my dorm bed, air-con, hot water, etc. etc. - everything and more is there. The staff were exceedingly cheerful, helpful, thoughtful, and just plain cool. Not a party place but quite social in the common area. My fav. place to date. Top Recommendation.

Sihome Backpackers Hostel

Vientiane, Laos

Sihome is a very good traveller's hostel the executes the basics well. Cramped but clean bathrooms and showers. Good wifi from my dorm bed (ymmv), air-con, hot water, locker for my pack, a somewhat large and very social place, breakfast was varied and nice, the staff was helpful and pleasant. I thought the security was a little iffy since it was so large and open but all in all, I would stay there again, and I do recommend it - it's especially good if you want to meet other travellers.

Liberty Guest House

Luang Prabang, Laos

Wifi worked well in my room, clean, air-con and hot-water worked fine, excellent security, very pleasant and helpful staff. As others have commented it's a 10 minute walk to the market and the riverside restaurants but for the trouble you get a quiet location and a great sleep. Not a party place but a great place to relax and recharge. Guy at the desk even gave me a ride to the bus station gratis. Recommended.

Suneta Hostel Khaosan

Bangkok, Thailand

Suneta, located right in the centre of Khaosan, for me sets a new standard for what a traveller's hostel can be. Key fob security and 24 hour oversight, an exceptionally helpful and friendly staff, privacy doors on dorm beds with full light, power, ventilation, and TV at your bedside (think cube hotel), a pleasant decor, breakfast, a social area where you will meet other travellers, HBO, hot water, air con, very clean... the list goes on and on. Top grades in every dimension. Recommended.

Stones Bar Dorm Rooms and Restaurant

Koh Phi Phi, Thailand

When you book here realize that you will be in the middle of phi phi party central. The music from the beach is deafening well into the wee hours and people in your dorm might be partying along. Just know what you're getting into. A big plus is that the staff are five-star hotel professional, graciously helpful, and reacting to any issues in a flash. A negative is the poor security - although there are solid bedside safes the doors of the dorms open out into the street. Clean. Wifi was spotty.

Patong Backpacker Hostel

Phuket Patong Beach, Thailand

Great location, clean, good wifi (but only from the common area), good security at the door. Atmosphere was just okay but most travellers are just passing through and YMMV. Help at the front desk was anywhere from the best ever (thanks for helping me arrange my tours and transport) to disappointing (but It's a tough job maybe someone was having a bad day). I was pleased to have stayed.

Gili Backpackers Castle

Gili Trawangan, Indonesia

24 hour security, good free wifi, good location. I thought three things distinguished Gili Backpackers: (1) the place is clean and they are hyper-proactive about keeping it that way, (2) the staff are exceedingly welcoming and helpful, and (3) with thanks to the staff they create events and an atmosphere in which you can't help but meet people - while you can also chill alone in your room or dorm when you need to take a break. Great place. Recommended without reservation.

Kayun Hostel

Kuta, Indonesia

Good free wifi, helpful staff, good 24 hour security. I was impressed by the facility itself: the dorms are very well built and surprisingly private with concrete barriers between you and the other guests; the showers were also spacious without a crowd or a rush at the end of the day and hot water when I was there. Not much of a social scene but YMMV. A bit of a walk to the beach but it did seem safe at night and Kuta is a big place. I was happy to have stayed there and I do recommend it.

An excellent traveller's hostel. All the basics well executed. Great location right between the ferry jetty and downtown Fort Kochi - a short walk to everything. Good free wifi in the common room. Clean. Very helpful and friendly staff. I had a similar positive experience at Vedanta's Varkala hostel. Both recommended.

Om Home Guest House

Varanasi, India

Good location, good free wifi, clean tidy room, excellent bed mattress, hot water, affordable on-premises restaurant, helpful and pleasant staff. I was very happy to have stayed with OM.

Hayarkon 48 Hostel

Tel Aviv, Israel

Spacious and breezy common areas. An excellent location close to the beach, transport, and a short walk to all the sites including Jaffa. The free wifi was quite good in my room (and from the room's deck) but not accessible from all the common areas. The private shower rooms were especially clean and spacious with ample hot water and quite a treat. A very good place to stay in TA.

Cheers Hostel

Istanbul, Turkey

Cheers Hostel is exceptional for its good location (right in the centre, easy to get to via public transit), its very friendly and helpful staff, the generous and healthy Turkish breakfast they provide, the free wifi that works well, and their fun top-floor pub with a spectacular view of Hagia Sophia. The only problems might be that the bathrooms are a little cramped and aged and the pub might be a little noisy (although they seem to shut the music down well before midnight),

Mango Rooms

Rhodes, Greece

My room was on the small side - but - everything else about Mango Rooms is fantastic. An atmospheric location, excellent free wifi, a kind, cheery, and helpful proprietor (he went out of his way to help me), a well appointed and super-clean room, and very good building security including a solid room safe. Its right in the centre of the old city and very quiet. However, if you have a lot of luggage - this is not the place for you since you are a little distant from the city gates.
