The Dreamer

Palomino, Colombia

Gorgeous facility and great location. More expensive than your average hostel, but this is WAY above average. It's pretty much a resort. Private rooms were huge, clean and I believe the nicest hostel room we've stayed in during our six months traveling SA. Beach is very nice, pool is quite large, restaurant food is excellent.

The Dreamer Hostel

Santa Marta, Colombia

Great hostel. Staff were extremely friendly and helpful with everything. Has everything you could want in a hostel, great restaurant, drink specials, activities, laundry service, pool, breakfast (extra). We then went down the road to Dreamer Palomino and it was amazing as well.

Black Sheep Hostel Medellin

Medellin, Colombia

We stayed in a private room and really like this hostel. Very nice modern rooms with TV, sofa, good mattress, etc. Location was good with only 5 minute walk to restaurants and just slightly further to Metro. Several nice sitting areas to hang out and lot's of cold drinks. Activities were easy to book through the hostel as well.

Kolibri Hostel

Pereira, Colombia

Excellent hostel overall. Location is amazing because it's very close to many restaurants, bars, atms, but it's right on the edge of town so it has a beautiful view of the hills as well. They have a great restaurant attached that serves the best scrambled eggs I've ever had. Also, they have many options for activities and we booked two of the best day tours of our whole trip here. Make sure you do the Estacion Pereira bike tour or waterfall tour here.

Masaya Bogota Hostel

Bogota, Colombia

Great friendly staff, very clean, nice hostel. Restaurant was nice and breakfast was good, but the rest of the menu was very limited. Overall we enjoyed it here.

Viva Hostel Design

Sao Paulo, Brazil

Viva Design feels more like a nice new home than a hostel. Very nice, new, clean, friendly and helpful staff, a quick walk to metro and supermarkets. Loved the nice big beds and ensuite bathrooms. Breakfast was good and kitchen was very well stocked. Overall definitely one of the best we've been to during our five months traveling around South America.

Paraty Beach Hostel

Paraty, Brazil

Hostel was ok. Right across from the beach, 10 minute walk to old town, nice atmosphere. We stayed in the six bed dorm and a few things could be better. The toilet wasn't properly fastened to the floor and leaked around the bottom. Six beds in this tiny room is quite cramped and would be far better with 4 beds and some lockers and area for bags. Also, the ceiling fan was useless and even standing directly under it there is no air circulating, so better ventilation is needed as it was very hot.

Biergarten Hostel

Ilha Grande, Brazil

America del Sur Hostel Buenos Aires

Buenos Aires, Argentina

Everything was excellent. The best staff we've had at any hostel. Very good atmosphere for meeting other travelers. Only thing that wasn't 100% was the WiFi, which was a bit flaky, but at least it worked most of the time in the lobby area.

Hostel Mora Mendoza

Mendoza, Argentina

We stayed here through Xmas and it was a very memorable time. They had a huge BBQ dinner and party that night where we met some other great people and had an amazing time. The hostel had a great atmosphere and there were always people with whom to share a 1 liter cerveza. They also had many great activities like wine tours, horseback riding, empanada cooking class, etc. Very fun times!

Hostal Quara

Salta, Argentina

To be fair the staff were nice and the place was cheap. However, the place is is just old and run down. They had it fumigated while we were there, but we found four live cockroaches in our room immediately after that! Also, the smell from the chemicals was lingering and needless to say we did not want to stay there that night. We reserved for 3 nights, but checked out after 1 and a half days. We were told that they couldn't give us a refund for the third night because that was their policy.

VIP House

Cusco, Peru

My wife and I stayed here on our second time through Cusco. Great location not far from the main plazas. Nice place, great friendly staff, good breakfast. No complaints here and would definitely go back.

Tayta Wasi Hostel

Cusco, Peru

This was one of the first hostels we stayed at during our 6 month South American tour, but I still remember how nice it was. The rooms are very nice, clean and modern. There were good heavy blankets so we stayed very warm at night. The owners don't speak much English, but they were so friendly and helpful that we felt quite comfortable even with our very poor Spanish skills. Google translate is a life saver. The breakfast was also quite nice. Delicious fresh bread, eggs, juice and coffee.
