Biggest Downside: Air conditioning. Cartagena is hot and humid. Our air-conditioner was broken for three days and the staff did little-to-nothing to fix it. After asking multiple times, an employee was finally sent over -- who didn't fix anything, just pressed buttons. They did this twice, and assured us each time it would work. It did not. After a 45-minute debate at checkout, we were finally given a modest 10% discount for our sweat and troubles. Biggest Upside: The location is great.
Happy Buddha is definitely one of the cleanest, most up-to-date hostels we've ever stayed at. It has a great atmosphere, great breakfast, and is an excellent value for money. It is located in the charming El Poblado neighborhood, but is a bit of a walk/metro ride to any notable sites.
We stayed at three hostels in Colombia, and Alegria's was definitely the best. The accommodations are charming, the staff is very friendly and helpful, and the dogs, Mocha and Poker, are awesome. We only suggest fixing the bedroom door lock.
