They have some live ins that make lots of noise at night and don't clean up after themselves in the kitchen and common area. They were taking action to solve this when we were there. Other than that this is a good hostel to stay at. Near the city, near supermarket, wifi works well outside of peak times. Kitchen is well equipped and is clean after cleaners have been in.
When we stayed there was a lot of long term stayers. Our room was beside the main entrance to our building and the door was slamming all the time with people coming in and out at all hours of the day and night. The door has a heavy spring so it slams hard and actually shook the wall/bed. Hard to get a good sleep in as they have a room check knocking on your door at 10am and then a cleaner at 11am. You could have a decent stay here if you get a room away from the noise.
AC in the room was broken couldn't get a good nights sleep. Not what you expect from YHA. One of the lockers in the dorm was broken also but we could share the other one.
Party hostel be aware. There were ants in the kitchen & dorm. The AC in the room didn't work as the room was not sealed. No lockers in the room that can be locked. Supermarkets on the island are too far in the heat and expensive buy food in Townsville. You can't BYOB as base is licensed. The bus comes like once an hour. Wifi and phone coverage was terrible. Staff come and try to clear you out/ change the bed before check out at 10am. No shade at the pool. Not much shade / AC in the whole place.
This place has a nice chilled out atmosphere. The staff are really friendly here and provide lots of information on tours/events happening today/tomorrow on a whiteboard at reception. There is a supermarket nearby to get food and the kitchen/bathroom are kept really clean. I recommend doing the walk where you can see the sea turtles.
Key card to get in/out of hostel/rooms. Toilet/shower/mirror is in the doom and shared by all 8 people. Very small free lockers in the room you need your own lock. They charge $10 for a larger locker. Its a large hostel lots of people in/out. Great location, near shops, pubs, lagoon, bus and rail and all your tours. There was a free bus from the airport brought us to the hostel. It will be loud especially on weekends. There is a bar/nightclub down stairs. Cheap meals available there.
They had some long term stay people here that didn't return shared items like cups plates to the kitchen. Couldn't make a cup of tea because there was no cups or sugar. Not a huge deal but its a basic I have found in other hostels.

Really nice staff, really good location, small pool on the roof can get crowded still nice though. Spent most of the time out and about in the night life. I would say its one of the nicer hotels to stay in this area.

Decent place to stay a little outside the main city but you can walk there in about 25 mins. There are always tuk tuk's outside the hotel which you can get, just remember to negotiate a cheap price. The hotel is very chilled out lots of plants around. It has pool too which was why we stayed here. Really liked this area of Thailand, everyone is more chilled out and people are not hassling you to buy stuff all the time. You can do some great trips/ from here can go on and great bar's in the city.
Staff at Penzy's are all very helpful and nice people. Hostel is kept very clean, rooms are cleaned everyday. Penzy can get discounts on tours so just ask. You can rent a scooter from them too. Penzy's is just off the main road so quiet for sleeping but really close the beach and bar's/restaurants. All the usual things you need are nearby. You can rent a beach towel from them too but we had bought some. We found most of the good food places were 20 minute walk down the road. We recommend :)
In short do not stay here they are running a scam. Had a very bad experience, same thing happened to many other travellers we spoke with (same hotel). Read on for more details. No one came to pick us up from pier as advertised. When we arrived we were shipped off to another sub-par hostel even further away from long beach. It was a shed with no facilities and had been built that day. When I returned to complain the staff shouted at me and told me to take my money back and go find somewhere else.
The owner can get good discounts on tours etc and cheaper transfers to the pier, unfortunately we had booked somethings in advance.
Looks like it was formerly a business hotel turned hostel. Staff were very nice and helpful. Location is near Uneo where you can get on the yamanote line which will take you to all the tourist spots. It is near a subway station too. There was a small kitchen with only 1 washer/dryer, but a laundry place is nearby. We also sent clothes to Australia from the post office nearby which was really easy. Good spot for couple wanting a private room/bathroom. Maybe not so good for solo travellers.
Bit of a walk to the train station when you have your full pack and are tired other than that great location near all the sights. Had some issues with wifi but the staff sorted it out
Mr Yano is a party animal and does tours quite often. We actually ran into him upon leaving the train station and he directed us to the hostel. The rest of the staff and really nice, many of them have done lots of traveling and can offer good advice.
Staff were very friendly and offered good advice
Really close to the train station. I recommend getting on the bus tour to bring you around the sights.
