Hostel Toruma

San Jose, Costa Rica

A President's former residence, I'm sure this place was cool once, but no longer. The staff were rude/apathetic, the key rarely worked in locks, we were charged $5 extra to check in 3-4 hrs early when they had plenty of room, the pool was ice cold, there is NOTHING around the hostel outside, and they don't have a functioning bar or restaurant of any kind as advertised (they try and send you to another hostel Pangea 3 kms down the road). The place feels dead. Don't book here. Go with a brand.

Quetzal Ecolodge

Monteverde, Costa Rica

Excellent stay overall. Rick was awesome. Place had good decor, new wood furnishing/walls. Great door locks & shower water pressure. Amazing location, close to grocery stores, bus and cafes. Huge communal kitchen and TV area. Lots of choices of tours. A few complaints: shower never got hot, rooms were drafty with thin blankets , and bed sheets were small so they kept coming off. Free breakfast was served starting at 7am but every tour group or bus departed before 6:30am. Overall, good stay.

Magnolia Inn

Panama City, Panama

Huge old mansion perfectly located. Their staff are very friendly and super helpful and the price is very reasonable. Maria by the way is a superstar. Only downside is one staying in room one or two it is a very large room with many beds and people in and out every night. Ask for a 4 bed dorm. Overall very clean, 24/7 desk staff, great wifi connection, AC in the rooms, and an abundance of private bathrooms and shower rooms in the hallway.
