Set on an island a short walking distance from a major train station, the location is excellent, though not walking distance from Central Station, if that's what you're looking for. The guest kitchen is possibly the best I've seen in a hotel/hostel. Large, airy, and well equipped. They have good laundry facilities. The beds in my dorm were simply 6-inch foam with a basic mattress pad on top, which was barely adequate. I'm sure the hotel style private rooms are more comfortable though.

The hostel is in an apartment, and is like living in someone's home, complete with beds in the living room, scant privacy (the larger dorm is also a common room, and people must pass through it to get to the smaller dorm), taking off your shoes upon arrival, and couch throw type pillows. The staff are friendly though, and the atmosphere is homey. There are two cats and a dog on the premises, which is nice. Currently they have bed bugs, but once they have dealt with it, I would stay here again.

The large dorm rooms do not have lockable doors. A couple of the 'private' rooms have an open area at the top of the adjoining wall, so any noise or conversation can be clearly heard on either side. The kitchen has no dish rack or towels, so wet dishes pile up on the counter. There was no dish soap for most of my stay. The washing machine for the sheets, etc is in the kitchen, and always seems to be going, day and night, and is extremely loud, making it difficult to talk or relax while eating.

I enjoyed my stay here. The decorating is definitely in an older style, but in good repair. It was very clean. The location is about a ten minute walk from the train station and I found it easy to find. Locarno is a bit expensive, so the room is overpriced, but not bad for the area comparatively.

YMCA Hostel Basel

Found this a really nice hostel. Very close to the train station, only about four blocks in a straight line. The whole place was very clean and organized, including the kitchen. The range works! Always exciting in a hostel. There were very large lockers for every bed, big enough for most luggage, which was nice. On check in they give you a free pass for trams and buses in the city for the duration of your stay, which is a nice perk.

Good location in the city, although a bit tricky to find. While I was staying, there were a lot of people staying attending school, working, or trying to learn English, instead of "fellow vacationers", which is fine, but does change the atmosphere a bit. Generally clean though, well organized, and worth it for the price.

Thanks for your review. The time of the year kind of defines the type of guest staying - summer is the best time for making new friends.
